Hi. In windows 8 or above when you format your PC you get a choice to enter email for a Microsoft account. Ive had one since windows live ID right back at the beginning which I use on windows 8.1 and 10. But do you need a Microsoft account as in windows 7 you didn't need one so is it best to sign injust using a local account?. What do you use?. Also I wish there was a way with out a 3rd party app to go back to default settings as if you change anything in the settings on windows 8 or above they stay even when formatted when you sign back in.

Unless you use Windows apps I think the only reason to use a Microsoft account is to sign in to the Xbox app, which I needed to do to test out the game capturing mode in Windows 10 (there are extra settings available in the app).

I haven't bothered changing it back to a local account only, but that's just laziness.

I use a local account. I have no need or desire to sync my devices. I don't want to use MS email and I also despise the new apps and much prefer to install my own choice of applications. I feel much more in control of my system and data by using a local account.
