This says it all really.

Ok, here's a new one: with Sony's announcements today they've issued a titled "Next-generation Console Comparison Fact Sheet," (downloadable here [DOC]) so let's see some facts. First up, were you aware that to use your Xbox 360 Core system you're required to buy the 20GB drive add-on, an HD DVD drive, a wireless controller, and an Xbox Live sub? We weren't either. But hey, it says right there, "requires users to buy" and this is, in fact, a "fact sheet." Of course, none of that's actually true, and what's more, were one to use the Xbox 360 Premium console pack in that chart instead of the Core pack, the total would be $399 for a console with that very same hard drive, wireless controller, and Xbox Live Silver subscription (which provides access to everything but multiplayer) -- remember, kids, an HD DVD drive is not required to do anything but watch high def movies -- it has nothing to do with high def gaming. We hear Microsoft ain't too happy about this chart either and is preparing certain legal action, namely because it could be misleading to otherwise unwitting retail employees selling customers game consoles this holiday season. Go figure.

P.S. -In the interest of fairness, it's also worth pointing out the Wii browser is what will cost you after the first 6 months -- not their online service. What's more, if you download the browser before June of 2007, it's straight up free. Otherwise, Nintendo hasn't yet announced details of the cost of their online service so far as we know. Another nice one, Sony.

P.P.S. -We just confirmed with Microsoft that another Sony claim -- that you need a memory unit or a hard drive to use the WiFi adapter -- is also false. You can grab a Core pack with no memory card and plug in a WiFi adapter and get on your home network. Sheez Sony, did we mention we moonlight as fact checkers?

It's accurate in so far as they're comparing like for like as in a console that can:

Play hi-def media
Has a wireless controller
Can play games online
Has a hard disk

They just aren't clear on the point they're trying to make (which is perhaps rather intentional)

This smacks of desperation to me. Sony realise they are in a huge fight if they want to remain the dominant console maker, and so are spouting obvious rubbish in the hope a few gullible people will believe it and buy their console instead of the cheaper, and some would say better, alternative in the Xbox 360/Wii. Quite sad really.

Yeah they are saying in order to get the specs the same the user is required to buy. But what you need to look at is the language.
'Requires user to buy' is correct if they had said 'user required to buy' it changes the sentance completely. So they are not saying anything wrong.

edit hmmmm maybe not sure now thinking about it, they mightta got it the wrong way around lol :D

it isn't all that strange to be frank, we see it all the time with the big players. Microsoft and sony, intel and amd, NVIDIA AND ATI........

so nothing unusual there really. I'm trying to keep a completely unbiased opinion on the two companies, but what is apparent is that its sony throwing all the abuse and MS debunking them. It definately reeks of something, thats for sure.

It's phill said its accurate so far as comparing the prices of like-for-like, but they are deliberately missing key information like the price of the premium, and deliberately missleading like the "need" to buy the accessories to do anythign at all. Thats a fallacy and id expect that to be retracted very soon, and for sony to 'suddenly' change there tactics and the 'meaning' of that article.

Just to clarify something about the PS3 online stuff (this seems as good a thread as any to ask) but I thought it was similar to Live, in that you could get online for free, but there was a charge to play online etc? But it's been ages since I heard anything about it, so I could be I've got that wrong. Can anyone enlighten me?

Free to play, pay to download stuff.

Ah, thanks :) Well, that does seem like a better deal than MS - BUT I am assuming that they don't run any central servers and leave it all up to the publishers. That's were the cost will come in with MS, I guess time will tell if Sony's style will compare favourable. It works for PC games I guess.

Sony have done somthing stupid, keep your friends close and your enemie closer, Sony should never of released that fact sheet, ever.

The fact of the matter is that, to get to my Xbox 360 to a similar spec as the ps3 (ie wireless, HD movies etc) it would cost as much as a ps3. But i didn't have to pay that all up front.

The problem Microsoft still have is the casual gamer thinks the PS3 will be much more powerful than the 360, which is rubbish, but i remember the same thing happening with the Dreamcast, the Playstation 2 was said to have 10x the power- and the ability to make me cry!

Xbox will have a HDMI cable within the next year, Live will still be the bench mark, there will be no difference in the look of 3rd party multi-platform titles, but one console will have a next gen DVD drive that no one supports anymore. Sony missing Christmas is big, but they could sell a shoe box to some people if it said Playstation on it (including me to be fair).

I would like to add that this is the last time Sony will blindly lead masses into believing what they're told unless they start living up to their word. If the PS3 is not the winner in the next-gen console race, and Blu-Ray is the winner in the next-gen DVD war then this maybe the end for Sony as we know it.

Except with a Core you get a controller, so in fact you'd now have 2 controllers. How's that comparing like for like?

Also if you use the Premium instead you get a component cable and a headset, both of which are missinng from the PS3.

Then we add the optional, sorry essential according to Sony extra; the HD-DVD drive. Sony forget to mention you get a remote control. Yet for the PS3 the remote costs an extra $29.99.

So this is nothing close to like for like. I think Sony have stooped a bit low this time and to label all this as "Required" is a bit stupid and shows how desperate they've become.

Pretty much sums up what I was going to say.
I really hate this type of marketing, aimed at customers who don't know much about components/specs/costs etc (parents).
Why would anyone in their right mind by a core system, then a hdd and a wireless controller instead of a premium pack....

initial outlay would be less i suppose, but cost more in the long run. Tho if anything that could work in MS's favour due to offering a multitude of ways to spec out what you need.

Gotta agree Sony's marketing can be seen as great to the normal Joe Blogs who knows nothing spec wise but to the people who know what is really going on its aload of rubbish to be polite!. The problem is that so many Sony/playstation fanboys agree on everything that Sony says to be true that it actually works!, which is what makes me angry, brainwashed fools!
