Microsoft Pulls a Fast One with E3 Xbox One Demos

With its focus on on-demand entertainment at the expense of gaming prowess, Xbox One didn't impress gamers at E3, who instead flocked to Amazon to pre-order their PlayStation 4, which not only features faster hardware, that could translate to better visuals in gaming, but is also a whole 20 percent cheaper ($499 vs. $399). At E3, Microsoft tried to pull a fast one. It set up several gaming stations allegedly powered by Xbox One, where gamers could play unreleased Xbox One games using the new Xbox One controller, just to get a feel of how rich and smooth the graphics really are. Some of them fell for it, others didn't. When these peeping toms didn't find the screens wired to an Xbox One main unit, they yanked open the cupboards below, only to find a full-fledged Windows 7 gaming PC.

How full-fledged you ask? Keen observers across the forumscape made out a rig powered by an Intel LGA2011 processor, which could at least be a Core i7-3820, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 700 series reference design graphics card, which could at least be a GeForce GTX 770. Such a system would obviously give you a rich and smooth gaming experience.

Microsoft Xbox One features a custom-designed application processor by AMD, which combines eight 64-bit x86 cores based on the "Jaguar" micro-architecture, with a GPU that packs 768 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, and a unified quad-channel DDR3-2133 memory interface, holding 8 GB of memory. This memory is cushioned by a large 32 MB SRAM cache on-die. In comparison, Sony's PlayStation 4 features a custom-designed application processor, too, which features the same CPU portion, but a bigger graphics core with 1,152 stream processors, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 8 GB of RAM, which can be used as both main and graphics memory. On top of all that, the PlayStation 4 is $100 cheaper, at $399.

They could have at least used an AMD GPU.:D

This was been happening at events like e3 for some years now, especially for games with a pc variant.

The most surprising thing to me is the choice of pc hardware not the fact it's running from a pc :p

Some claimed they used emulation, which to be fair, is never going to happen.

Unfortunately they used a Nvidia card with the 320.18 drivers. What initially looked like bad PR for AMD actually ended up looking pretty good as the message of the way its meant to be played was definitely lacking with driver crashes and bsod messages in abundance on the xbox windows machines. What were microsoft thinking?

Posted and discussed last night in the AMD E3 thread.

I read there it was the developers choice not Microsoft, not sure if that's good news or not lol

I guess cant be bad news if you are a pc gamer :)

I think they used Nvidia 7x series GPU's as the current AMD offerings are not powerful enough to run Xbox one games. :D

Well it's official now

Anyone running 7 series NVidia cards do not have to rush out and upgrade when the new consoles hit the shelves.

If the 7 series is good enough for Microsoft it's good enough for me lol.:D:p:)

Maybe because the new consoles supposedly will be running PhysX which to emulate decently works best with an Nvidia GPU rather than relying on CPU power.

As Linus has said in that you tube link posted above, the Development kits will be PC's anyway.

It'll be CPU PhysX the consoles run.

Yeah, what a spectacular 'Male Rooster up'

I don't think there were any Nvidia PhysX games played on it.

they will use the new havoc (owned by intel) engine which uses opencl for hardware acceleration which amd cards can do as well as nvidia.

ps4

<troll> Nvidia is clearly the better platform for PC gaming!! </troll>

Runs and hides....

Did you miss this?

I mentioned the other day that I was hearing rumors of Microsoft throwing around a considerable amount of money to have publishers only show games on the Xbox One during E3. Most people dismissed my admittedly flakey news as 'that's what always happens.'

I've talked to more people since then though and this isn't the usual jostling for publishers on stage that happens at E3. Microsoft is throwing BIG money around to reverse course on idea that they aren't a games console. The rumors are that PS4 versions of multiplats, by those who do take the money, won't be shown AT ALL. Not on stage and not on the show floor.

I don't feel bad for Sony because business is business. I'm sure they will find a way to have a decent show... or they will have to recover afterwards. That's not really my concern.

Now, there's no need to take my word on this if you don't want to. But do keep an eye on E3 next week. With them buying up everything in sight and now potentially cutting an open roundtable out(to assumedly talk one on one with friendly press) and word that finding multiplat games on the ps4 on the show floor will be much harder than anticipated.... just keep an eye on it. Maybe my sources are wrong. But I feel confident enough in this info to share it.

I'm not saying to jump to conclusions. I'm just saying it may be something to keep an eye on.

Microsoft is allegedly paying many third-party publishers so that they won't show off their PlayStation 4 games at E3 2013, according to a new report.

E3 2013, the most important games convention out there, is set to begin next week, and both Microsoft and Sony are expected to focus heavily on their next-gen consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, respectively.

In order to gain the upper hand on Sony, Microsoft is apparently resorting to some unorthodox practices, like paying a lot of money to third-party publishers so that they won't show their PlayStation 4 games either on stage or at their actual booths.

The report arrives from a source on NeoGAF, which posted a lot of true rumors in the past, so it's possible that Microsoft really is resorting to such tactics ahead of E3 2013.

The company emphasized that at the event it's going to focus only on games for the Xbox One, so it could try to create a false sense that more games are coming to Xbox One than PS4.

Not surprising, I bet Sony are cursing themselves for not thinking of it first, they could have really drummed home the Xbox one isn't as serious games console idea as the PlayStation 4 if they had of.
