Finally, after a year-long development phase, Microsoft Security Essentials have been publicly released. If you can't wait to get your hands on Microsoft's latest security software, you don't need to wait any longer.

In June, a public-beta was offered, and the download limit was reached within 24 hours. It will be absolutely free for all users Windows XP, Vista and 7, both in 32bit and 64bit flavors — as long as you have genuine copy. Microsoft will not bundle it with Windows 7, though, when it's released on October 22nd, 2009.

"Consumers have told us that they want the protection of real-time security software but we know that too many are either unwilling or unable to pay for it, and so end up unprotected," said Amy Barzdukas, general manager for consumer security at Microsoft. "With Microsoft Security Essentials, consumers can get high-quality protection that is easy to get and easy to use – and it won't get in their way."

i will still use nod32 on my main system as i have a year to run, however this is a very good free bit of kit, i use it on my laptop and store it on my USB key, for me its the lightest and best free AV i have used.

i ran this on a pc that had avg updated and running, it found loads of spyware and a 2 viruses that avg had spotted. to have this on a usb stick that you can dump on anyone's pc is great for those of us that do call out jobs for all the friends and families under the sun!

I was thinking of switching to this from Avast, however correct me if im wrong but apparently Mse dosnt have web filtering cabability like Avast?

Also Avast version 5 should be out soon with a new interface and an improved anti virus engine.

it wipes the floor with Avast, but if it does not do what you want then stay where you are i guess, but sure there are other web filtering apps?

Worth swapping from AVG free 8.5?

its a no brainer

if you want a free one then i would look no further than this, after all its made by the company that make the os you use it on. if my nod32 superscription expired tomorrow i would properly switch on all my pc's

This is dangerous. The end of third party security apps is nigh! Microsoft Firewall and AV...

i see your point, but MS more than most want windows protected, after all its the Mac v PC war "you don't get virus's on apples crap" - MS no that virus's and spyware look bad on them so i think what they are doing is great

I take it even after a couple of weeks it's still looking rosy? Think i'll have a go with it instead of renewing NOD. :)

i'm a big nod32 fan and to be honest i will renew mine, just because i think it's so dam good, but on my laptop i'm keeping MSE, i have been liberating all my friends and office workers and its the best free one i have ever tried... very light weight and efficient

I tried it but it didn't find anything. May as well stick with Avast and Spybot SSD.

MSE comes in 32 and 64 bit versions, Avast is just generic and uses much more resources, if you're a freebee av person then i can't understand why you would use anything but an MS made product to protect an MS operating system
