Microsoft Server: Best place to learn?

I recently invested in a basic home server and have set it up so far to work as a general media/storage server without any hitches on Windows Server 2012.

However I am interested in expanding my knowledge to more challenging things like VM's on Hyper V & other server features. However my adventures into such topics have left me feeling a bit overwhelmed by terminology & how everything is meant to connect to each other.

Does anyone have any recommendations for some sort of resources [sites/books] out there that teaches the basics of networking & step by step guides for MS server 2012?

The train signal and cbt nuggets courses are good and ive used them myself. You can get free videos on their websites and you can also get many free videos from other people on youtube.

Just type in to youtube stuff like, "set up domain 2008 r2" and "how to configure dns on 2008 r2" and you will see loads of instruction videos for windows server.

You can get vmware workstation or vmware esxi and try learn that.

Build your own Virtual Machines. Pick it up as you go.

Yeah I've started doing that, just having some issues with connecting to domains so need to backtrack until I can find where the issue is. would have been nicer to have a full knowledge before going in.

Like the look of that cbt nuggets, will try using that.

You can't have full knowledge in these types of areas because it's not as simple as learning it all. You have to learn while things brake and get fixed unfortunately.

There is only so much you can know until something goes wrong. What you can learn though is where to look to get help to fix it. This is extremely important.

Ask here what your problem is and I am sure someone will come along to assist. You may require a title change / new thread with the problem to attract those who are of interest in helping.

Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is free, and pretty sure you can download 90 days trials for the full server edition. Get a computer and stick an empty drive in it and crack away. Microsoft also put out test lab how-to's. Build, play and break it! have fun.

Good point, hopefully I can reserve forum posts to when things go completely wrong. At the moment things are ok, haven't broken things too much, just not sure if everything has been configured correctly and haven't got all the knowledge to check.

Whats the difference between this and the Hyper V manager I have installed on my 2012 server through the 'Add Roles and Features' ?

Doing searches is the first main aspect to trouble shooting. You will be surprised not to find someone or something who/where already solved the issue one is having.

Indeed, was just hoping someone here would have an answer to make this thread a more valuable resource for other people.

Anyway will get on Google and check some tutorials out
