Seeing as this is the "other" section of the forums thought i might seek "other" kinds of help.

Has anyone here got any knowledge Microsoft Silver light,
I brought a year of Love film instant and it uses Silver light instead of flash to play movies. but i can't seem to change the application storage, so its fixed at 1MB which quite frankly sucks...

Did Silverlight even take off at all?

It's been around for what, 4 years? However, I've never known a PC to have that program installed on it, and I've never come across a web site that required it as a plug-in or a stand-alone program.

Lovefilm was forced to stream all there content in Silver light due to "protection" stuff else they wouldn't be allowed some contracts.
believe me, i wouldn't have it installed if i didn't have too.

Not really and that and flash will be replaced by html5, they just need to sort some sort of Drm out for html5, but thy can't agree on how to implament it.

Silverlight has been used on some big name websites(like Netflix) and has been installed on lots of computers to support those websites, so I very much doubt you've never seen it installed, more likely you just didn't notice it.

Cheers Kinkaito and Glaucus :-) Didn't realise it was to do with DRM. I'll kinda miss Flash for its cheesy animations, especially stuff like B3ta and Rather Good!

P.S. Glaucus, regarding your edit: I use portable Firefox on a stick as my full time browser and I've never seen it in my add-ons.

SKY use silverlight
i think virgin medias streaming site does aswell.
a lot of porn sites use it to.

it seems popular with streaming sites that rely on drm/authentication

i like flash more to be honest, at least you can set the application storage to unlimited.
The issue with Silver-light is it's limited to 1MB, so even with my 79MB download connection, i still get buffering issues, which is just point blank, crappy service from a crappy program.

I do understand it's to stop people copying the program, maybe by limiting the space it's preventing people from saving the movie for later or something,

Either way, Microsoft's website say to do something to increase the application storage, but it just doesn't work, i don't have the option, Maybe it's because i'm using the new version compared to when Microsoft put the information down.

Just had a look on my HTPC which I use for lovefilm. Exactly the same with storage at 1mb. According to the Microsoft website there's no way to change it yourself. Websites will ask for more if they need it.

Incidentally your sig looks like four lines on my iPhone, but more on my HTPC. Must be something to do with font size and screen resolution.

DRM, it's worse than the pull out method.

Unfortunately most of the companies don't have much choice, like Netflix. They don't own the rights, they only license teh rights and to obtain those rights they have to protect the content.

Tis a shame, as it only ever **** up paying customers and doesn't affect pirates.

ah... nothing i can do then :( shouldn't of brought lovefilm lol,
and my signature is four lines ^^, exactly as i was informed :>

might try to call lovefilm up, and ask them to "ask for more" i really hate having a buffer mid stream knowing i have the top 3% fastest download speed and im still getting it, and can't even press "pause" to let it buff because its limited to 1MB... which literly should have 1/8th of a second to download..

Silverlight is, frankly a pos. I, like most, hate flash - however it it gpu accelerated and receives regular updates. Silverlight isn't. You're lucky if you get one update in a year.

In fact if memory serves then it took ms almost 4 months to get the current version onto windows update after release. It went from ms saying there'd never be another release to replacing flash on very streaming service within 6 months. Funny that.
