Has anyone here ever ordered a product direct form microsoft using one of their student deals? Are there any hidden catches to it because it seems almost too good to be true.

What im interested in is microsoft office ultimate 2007, which retails for arround £470, yet microsoft are offering it direct from their site to people who can prove they are a student (like myself, as i have an open.ac.uk email address) for under £40. that seems like its too good to be true, thats over a 90% saving.

Is there any catches? like a limited time license, or limited to only one copy?

(just to note, i know microsoft is a competitor since OcUK sells microsoft products, but i spoke to gilly and he said its an OK topic)

I can't quite remember the specifics unfortunately, I will look this up. The retail licence allows you to have an install on a desktop and two mobile devices. I can't remember if this is a case for this deal. But there are no other catches.

Its not too good to be true, its for students only, there is no limited time, and you can install on upto 2 computers.

I think one has to be a laptop - certainly the office ultimate disk i've got from them on a student offer licenses one PC and one laptop. Not sure how they can tell (maybe some vista-tied-to-the-motherboard trickery...?), but i havent been disappointed - a very cheap way to get a good piece of software!

Thanks Burnsy - as i say, i wasnt sure. I did read the license (mine was last years student offer) and picked out the one laptop and one PC part, but its hard to figure out exactly what they mean!

If it is possible to do 2 installs that that will be great, as i use both my PC and my laptop for coursework, both of which currently use open office.

Open office is good, but as has been said, its far from being a good replacement to microsoft office. My mine problem that i have come across is that it has problems saving things in the some of the .doc formats. For instance, i once lost a load of work because when i saved my open office document as a .doc, it lost all the images i placed in the document (i didnt realize this till after i closed open office, and re-opened the saved .doc).

MS Office ultimate is a bit overkill for what i need, like MS access, that notes program (i just use notepad for notes) and such is beyond what i would need, but at less then £40 its a great deal when OcUK (and majority of competitors) sell the heavily cut down office home/student for £50.

Was just wondering - If you buy Office in this deal, can you re-download it after a windows reinstall etc? I know you can get a backup disc for about £10...

Its a one time download, you get an exe file which you can burn to a disc and store copies everywhere you care to really.

As has been said it is a way of getting students using Microsoft software as early as possible in their career.
Most people like to stick with "what they know" - so start them on MS products at a young age and they will want to continue using them.

There is no catch at all, the licenses are very open and if you qualify for them you really shoulld go for it.
My wife has recently started a short OU photography course.
With her open.ac.uk email address we bought Office Ultimate for her at around £50.
From October 10th you can get Vista Ultimate Upgrade for £40 as well.
So that is Vista & Office 2007 Ultimate for around £100 - bargain.

I understand that with this deal you get a license for 3 computers.. Would it be possible to put it on 1 PC, 1 Mac and 1 Laptop?

The Mac really is where I am wondering..
