Behind you... Naked!
I got one of these. I also have a Linx. Both are 10"

I hardly use them, and the other week, I dug them out and the Linx, which is capable of installing anything I want to throw at it, and was running Linux, simply wont start up anymore, and the Surface which only seemed to want to install Windows RT and nothing else. does start up, but it wont install anything because it wants to update its version of Windows store, and it wont do that cos its on RT, and so Im kind of left with a useless pile of junk... Or is it?

I mean... If I can install anything except Win RT then I can get some other use out of it.

I would like to use it as simply a Video player, but I cannot install ANY Video player onto it at all it seems?

Anyone offer any reason for me to not throw it at a wall?

Yeah, I thought as much.
The resolution on the Surface is a tiny bit better than the Linx, but, absolutely everything in the Linx was superior in every way, from the keyboard, to the fact that I can install any O/S I wanted to... Hell, for a giggle, I even threw android onto it LOL, but that Surface is the single worst pile of junk that I have ever wasted my time in ever buying.

Its all simply down to it being RT and only RT that is the reason why I have hated it since I got it.

Ok, I will just chuck it then. Thanks.

Ah! - right... So, does it matter that its now in bits LOL?

I am not really much of a fan of Windows tablets anyway. I find them to be more of a novelty than anything to be taken seriously, while my Android tablets, I do.

That said, now that I am without a Windows tablet, in typical "Im one of those idiots who does not like being without"... I just bought myself another Linx one - no intention of ever making the mistake of buying a Microsoft one again. and, like these other 2 that I have previously owned... It wil be toyed with for a day and then dumped on a shelf to rot, but at least I will own one - just in case I need it LOL... Hell, no wonder im always skint!

More fool you to be honest. The RT variants were, as you've discovered, almost useless. The "Pro" variants (and the latter non pro - from Surface 3 upwards) are great pieces of kit, nothing else really comes close.

A used original Pro or Pro 2 would have been a superb buy now.

Yeah, you are right.

I had the Linx and I only bought the Microsoft one cos

1 - It was second hand and therefore cheap
2 - I wanted to compare it with the linx.

I didnt even consider that it was RT, and even if I did, I didnt think it was going to be THAT awful compared to any other version,. andeven so, I knew that I would simply be able to install another version of Windows onto it easy peasy... That turned out to be another failure point on my part lol

Hey, its all a learning curve, and yeah, the latter ones are some decent bit of kit, but are of zero use to me.

You say that, but you also say that Android tablets are "your thing". AMIDuOS installed on my Surface Pro 3 and I have two tablets in one. Runs really well too.

I think when I say Android is preferable, I do only actually mean in tablet form of course!
In other words, I have the Laptops for Windows and the tablets for Android, and while I have had each on the others platform, and even with Windows 8+ and the way that these newer Microsoft O/Ses work, are designed to work on tablets/touch screens, I still feel that Android is for the tablet and Windows should stay off the tablets and stick with what its good at.

And again I have had Linux, Android, and Windows in various flavours of all ( Well, I only have Android v2 that I can put onto PCs, but I have many variations of Lin/Win and a few other weird and wonderful operating systems of varying levels of fail/success ) and yes, the Surface 3 is a seriously good bit of kit. I freely admit, but the surface RT is most definitely NOT... If I could have got it to install absolutely anything at all, it would have been a nice tablet, but alas.
