I'm looking to get a surface Pro 4 for Uni this year. Last year I had a MacBook Pro, it looked pretty but i couldn't get used to it for more than word documents.

The Surface Pro 4 looks awesome, in the sense of that I can use it as a pad to write down maths, hopefully making the use of my writing pad, pretty much redundant.

I'd go for the I7 version, because well, who wants less? And it'll be my laptop as i don't have one. I had a play with one today when visiting the Guys in purple shirts but I don't seem to actually test it for real uses.

Anyone got any ideas or have/used one before properly?

I used to have the RT model but that was awful, you couldn't do anything on it.

Surely there are cheaper alternatives? It's uni.

Having used one at work, it's a very nice bit of kit, practical and very flexible in terms of use. If you double click the pen, it opens one note, which I think is a sorely underrated piece of software.

I thinks OneNote is one of the best parts of the Office Suite. Incredibly useful for note taking, and much more.

I used it at work to create a central place for our knowledgebase.

What happened to your MacBook Pro? Surely you could just get used to it, or install windows 10 in Parallels or virtual box. That way you could save money, and use windows on your mac.

I'm also not sure why you would want the i7 version if all you are going to be doing is note taking, and watching films/internet browsing on it.

The i5 version would more than likely be fine for those, just make sure you go for the version with 8GB of RAM.

Pretty sure even the base version would be more than enough.

Utilise an external hard disk and cloud storage to ensure that your work is backed up, and you'd be fine.

You need to outline a bit more in regards to what you will be using it for:

Uni work primarily - what kind of work do you envision it being used for other than note taking. (a £1500+ notepad?!) Not taking into account student discounts
Web browsing
Movie watching
Listening to music / streaming music
Pron

You won't need a core i7 for the above tasks.

I sold the MacBook to a friend of mine that uses it for music production, was also an i7 model.

Ah, reading back, I didn't put in there we are using AutoCAD this year quite a bit and the processing power would be nice.

And it's a gorgeous piece of kit, Im in love with the look of it. And I'll get one no matter what, it's just which one to get. Thinking the I7, 16gb and 256gb model. I'd go for the I5 if we weren't doing CAD. And all my PC's, laptops have been I7's.

It'll be everything as my iPad has gone kaput, I don't have a laptop at the moment and my desktop can't come with me :(

So from VagCom stuff on my car, to cad, to movies, music, light gaming (Solitaire), it'll be replacing my main PC as I'm rarely home. I'd rather over compensate than be oh I wish I'd bought the better model.

I think I'll need to have a play with the i5/7 models and see how they actually fare at proper usage. Not the light fiddle you have in stores.

Thanks

Where you buy it from. I got a good deal from JL for an i7 16gb 256gb with keyboard and OK mouse and case and warranty for 1299.

Also got the dock which is awesome.

PC World believe it or not. In the end just over £1100 with type cover, case and 128gb usb. I work next door so they do us discount and then they messed me around. I was standing there for 3 hours!!

I want one but it was silly money and they wouldn't give me money off it. I'll wait for one to come up second hand or something.

So you didn't get one in the end.

Well I can tell you...bloody awesome it is.

So refreshing to be able to use a tblet as a full blown work PC.

At least for what I do.

This post is one of the most confusing I have ever read. You bought one, and then say you'll wait for one to come up second hand.

But you got one, and it seems to do everything you want it to so far. Which is what matters.

Great news. Super happy with mine. I was going to go 512gb, but with the deal with JL I couldn't justify the extra 500 for double the memory.

I've got everything now in stalled and I'm only using 70gb.

I won't be playing games.or putting music on so all is gold.

Being able to run several VS2015, SQL server and docs and tabs all open at the same time with the 16gb ram is great.

Only improvement for me

4 cores
My keyboard doesn't always way up...think its when I have a Bluetooth mouse connected.
