is it just me or has microsoft gone from a company that creates its own ideas to a company that just blatantly steals other companys ideas and just chucks billions at it till it gets it right ??

so far to name but a few, its copied:
Search Engines ---> Ask Jeeves
Unix ---> windows NT later becomming the OS we all use today.
Mp3 player (not dissimilar looking to an ipod) ---> Zune
Games console ---> XBOX
Real player + other players ---> Media Player
Netscape ---> Internet explorer

it wouldnt be so bad if these products were unique but for most of them if you look under the hood they are just blatent rip off`s of their competitors...

I like the idea of integration. For all the little annoying things wrong with MS, I like them in *** grand scheme of things. So I tend to use MS stuff as it will probably run straightaway with windows.

Microsoft have copied everybody elses ideas since the dawn of time. Even the basic concepts behind the windows GUI were all ripped off from other O/Ss that were around at the time.

Has it actually ever invented anything as such?

I'm reasonably sure it didn't invent dos...or a windows style gui. It didn't invent webmail or instant messaging.

Feel free to prove me wrong but as far as i can see their input into the computing world (apart from stealing peoples ideas) has been to standardise the way we use computers. And thats solely down to their enormous market share (which admittedly is no mean feat).

At various points they may have had the best OS and other types of software...but did they actually come up with any of them?

who cares though, most of it works and works pretty well. There's lots of choice so you dont HAVE to use microsofts products. Afterall doesnt competition mean better products?

I'm not just having a go at them. But doesn't it strike you as slightly odd that microsoft (as the big boys) are perpetualy playing catchup and never leading the field?

Its one thing to take someone elses idea and implement it better, tis completly another to create a new concept.

i hear what your saying but do microsoft really have to copy EVERYTHING ? i mean some things just arnt worth it, this copy of youtube for example, we all know and love youtube, why would we want to use anything else ?

i can see them building a direct link button to the site into the next browser too to attempt to encourage people to use it.

Don't really have a problem with Microsoft, I find Windows XP the best OS myself, though not without it's flaws.

Is Youtube going bust anyway? I'm imagining the Microsoft one will be highly moderated, so song videos and other copyrighted material might be harder to come by on there :confused: (I often use it to listen to tracks to see if I like them and want to buy them). I hope thats not the case and that Youtube survives.

Microsoft didn't invent DOS they bought it.

Also the GUI was stolen from Apple, which Apple originally stole off of Xerox.

The Famous Quote of Bill Gates to Steve Jobs:
"Well I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbour named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set only to find that you had already stolen it"

micro$oft

this is why im changing to mac, im really getting sick of m$
Already done it and this very day I have just sold my old iMac to the bloke downstairs who is also sick to death of Windows. :)

As far as I know Microsoft have never been that innovative, they have always stolen others ideas. Perhaps in the beginning they started out down the right path but what have they actually came up with as an original concept. Windows I hear you cry but no, that was actually thanks to Xerox and Apple (as mentioned above) for the Windows GUI so I can't actually think of anything original that M$ has ever done tbh. :(

Leading the field = doing something new = risky.

Risky is fine when you're just starting up - in fact its the only way.

When you're a multi-billion dollar company though, its a BIG no-no.
