microsoft to make own tablets

This is how disappointment happens :p It's a rumour. No idea where it actually came from either, just one of those that appeared and was quickly jumped on.

I actually suspect it's Nokia's tablet. That was down for unveiling this month and there hasn't been any word on it so far. Chances are they worked closely with Microsoft on it, so the rumour won't be far out.

Optional tactile keyboard

Including the keyboard cover? I think itll be higher. Closer to £600 for the RT and £800 for the Intel. Prove me wrong MS ;)

Yeah you might be right actually. I just thought they would have priced the base model on par with the iPad 3. Straight away you've got 32gb over the 16gb iPad 3 base model and an on par price. Makes it quite attractive.

The spangly i5 would then be in line to complete with ultrabooks, or Airs - which when you think about it the £800 price tag is about right.

Live to be proven wrong though. :)

The event was only organised on Friday, so everyone only had the weekend to find out what it was about and since everyone goes home on the weekend there was no real way of getting any information.
Did he mean 'leaked ever' in relation to the project as a whole? It's the first I've heard of Surface - to be more precise it was via a news alert on the BBC News web site about 10 mins ago.

Yup, I was wrong, just like many others. Truth be told, I'm kinda gobsmacked. This device looks really, really good yet was developed in-house? Wha...?

Maybe Microsoft don't actually need Nokia after all and the current partnership is more about convenience than anything. That possibility implies rather interesting things about various conspiracy theories doing the rounds...

Thats what I meant, there were no leaked prototypes or anything. This is the first time I've heard of it

Looks lush but couldn't justify 7x price of my touchpad, would probably just put ics on it anyway

But damn it looks nice

The i5 machine is half a mm thicker than the original iPad that I'm holding right now. That is pretty daunting tbh.

RT machine will be the same price as comparable ARM-based tabs, available at W8 launch

i5 machine will be priced comparably to ultrabooks, released 3 months later.

"Pro coming in 64GB and 128GB models, will be priced on par with Ultrabook-class PCs" Well that kinda sucks...

I'm hoping that means the low-end ultrabooks, so anything from £700 through to about £900. Anything more than that and it's a definite 'no' for me, purdy as it might be.
