I recently upgraded my laptop to W7 from XP, I reinstalled my office 2003 and then expected to go to microsoft update and patch to the latest versions.
W7 patches fine but the "Microsoft update", as opposed to Windows update, no longer patches Office. Is it all change now in windows 7?
I cant see an easy way to patch office to the latest version anymore and am somewhat confused.
Before you ask both W7 and Office are totally legit...

I believe Windows Update (Control Panel > System Security > Windows Update) should take care of patching Windows 7 and your Office 2003.

You mentioned you upgraded from XP to Windows 7, in XP was Office 2003 already installed and patched? if yes, then your Office 2003 "reinstall" may have just being a Office 2003 "repair" in which Office 2003 and the patches would have remained installed.

If you check the installed updates, are the Office 2003 ones listed?

There is no strict upgrade route from xp to W7, so it was a format and reinstall, I am sorry if I muddied the waters by saying upgrade.
I have checked the installed update history and there is no mention of office patches, just W7. Asking to check for updates only checks for W7 updates, office is not considered....

Well, an update! I performed 2 reboots last night and the problem remained before shutting down. There was no option for me to choose in windows update to check for other MS products as is mentioned in guides on the net. I have gone via the office update site and the link to automatically check returns me to the windows update page. I started up this morning, checked for updates once more (there were only a few W7 updates) and rebooted again. On checking this time it found SP3 for office, so it seems to have sorted itself...a further boot and check now shows 18 further office updates.

Very odd though, it simply did not appear to have detected office for multiple reboots and update attempts. Alls well that ends well!

I think after Windows Update does a scan of your machine, it waits a number of hours before doing another scan, even if you manually do a Check for Updates.

The way to force Windows Update to scan is to type the command wuauclt.exe /detectnow as described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708617(WS.10).aspx

I think what might have happened in your case, is did you install Windows 7, then run Windows update to install Windows 7 patches, and then install Office 2003? When you then went to Windows Update, as the elapsed time between scans hadn't passed, it didn't detect any updates for Office 2003.

I installed W7 early this week and then patched it. Yesterday I installed office, but before doing so may well have manually checked for an update and installed.
After installing office I forced an update check but found nothing, there was no menu choice per the screenshot in windows update to include other MS programs but my memory may be faulty. Perhaps that only appears once timer has expired AND it then detects other MS software?
When this failed I went to office update site and tried the links top left for MS update and MS update (vista) just in case. Each took me to local windows update page shich showed nothing.

Sounds like I fell foul of the timer somehow as it picked it up later , thanks for clearing it up for me. :)
