Howzit guys.

Last night I had Windows XP Pro on a VPC within Vista. However I can only get it to work with my DVD drive..it won't pick up any USB drives and I can't share files between it and Vista...
Aparrently I need to download an extention to it?

Any advice would be greatly apperciated.

Many thanks all.

Microsoft in its infinate wisdom does not support USB, god knows why! and it should definately pick up your cd ROM drive... have you told it to use it??

Sorry, wasn't clear. It does pick the CD Rom up. You see I am running Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 under the Windows XP Pro..now I don't want to copy every program I make to a CD...

So it leaves me stuck. I was looking in the option bit and saw that the Share files is disabled, due to a missing component that I can download...but where from?

Have you installed VM Additions?

(Action->Install/Update Virtual Machine Additions)

Without this bit installed, you do not get pointer integration, shared folders etc.

Also, check what your network card is set up as within VPC, as I have not had problems with network access (admittedly host is XP not Vista) - should be either the one you would normally use in windows or the NAT one - both seem to work for me. I normally just network a drive using this for some of my VMs

How can I download those additions to save them then take it to my home machine to update?

If I mapped a networked drive under Vista..and setup the XP to same network, are you saying I could share files that way?

Many thanks. :D

Use VMWare its about 1000000000000000% better than MS Virtual PC.

It might be but there is nothing really wrong with Virtual PC in the first place. It does what it does very well.

The additions are there as a default. Unless MS have altered the install in the last week or three.

I've tested both MS Vitrual PC and VMWare extensively. VMWare is a much better product all round IMO of course.

The additions are in a sub folder of the main Virtual PC installation called 'Virtual Machine Additions'. Inside that are 2 .iso files that are mounted into the virtual machine when needed. You can copy these and transfer them to your other PC. But they should already be there.
