Hi guys.

I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

I am finishing off my dissertation for final year at uni.

I want to add in page numbers to the document, but I only want it to start counting from page 6, as before that I have things like Title pages, Abstracts, declarations etc.

I cant find out how to do it. There wasnt anything in page number format

I am using Office 2007

Thank you, Tom

Double-click your footer to select it, then go to Design > Page Number > Format Page Numbers and set the 'Page numbering, Start at' value.

thats what i first tried, but all that does it set the value at which it begins counting page numbers. It still starts numbering from the title page.

When I tried page break, all it did was bump my text down the page?

Couldn't you just delete the pages at the beginning that you don't want numbered, i.e. move them to the clipboard. Number the remaining pages, then reinsert the pages sitting in the clipboard.

EDIT: yeah forget that dumb suggestion.

Ah, do what Spammeh says then:

Insert your title, contents pages etc then on the page before the page you want the numbering to start go to Page Layout > [Page Setup] > Breaks > Section Break, Next Page. Then insert a new page (CTRL+Enter).

On the next page (where you want it to be 1 again) go to the footer then Design > Page Number > Format Page Number and set the 'Start at' figure again. This works for me.

Thank you for your help.

I have done that (again, this time properly. lol)

I have got it starting my contents page as page 1.

although what it has done now, is start counting the first pages, i.e from the title page etc, until the section break.

I cant work out how to tell it not to do page numbers for that section :(

You can hide it on the first page by checking 'different first page' (or something named similar) in the footer options.

Why not just change the page number formatting in the contents pages to Roman numerals like normal books?

Ahhh, Roman numerals. good idea. Thank you!
expect a new thread asking how to do roman numerals. hahaha

I guess a really crappy way of doing it would be to split in into two documents;) If you need it done asap...

Thats also a good option :D

Thank you for all the help guys. Greatly appreciated!
