Hello all,

I am hoping someone significantly smarter than me will be able to help me out with a question on Word. To make matters slightly more tricky, the problem is on my girlfriend's computer and she's in NZ at the moment, so I have been trying to walk her through a solution over the phone which isn't as easy as if I was sat in front of it. Anyway, here goes:

We recently got her a new computer (Asus laptop, running Windows 7) and she's having trouble opening Word documents on it, both her own saved ones on the computer and links on the web (Internet Explorer, unfortunately!) that link to a Word doc. It occasionally opens up the document without a problem, but most of the time it says:

Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

So, having Googled it, I found plenty of info all pointing to similar solutions that involve temporary internet files that are created when opening the word doc (I can understand this on the web links, but would this still be causing the problem on her own docs?). So thinking this would be an easy fix I walker her through both of the solutions detailed here - LINK

Unfortunately, it seems that her computer is already set up correctly as per that link so the fix changed nothing and didn't solve the problem.

My knowledge is very much exhausted now, so does anybody here have any advice for us please?

As an aside that I'm unsure is related but worth mentioning in case it affects anything, it seems she's not set us as the administrator on the laptop so I will get her to change that too as per these instructions - LINK - does that sound reasonable?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks all

don't forget that using skype one can show the DeskTop
I am anything but an expert and usually do a reinstal when encountering any major probs. On new computers Dell/Asus etc I always remove the Windows 7 that comes pre installed with all the bulging **** and install a virgin MS copy.

Ah, thanks marmalade - I didn't know that was possible with Skype. That will certainly be a help. Cheers.

Anybody else with any ideas on how to solve the error?

Thanks very much.

TeamViewer will give you full remote access to her laptop.

sounds like windows has lost the temp folder location

right click on "my computer"
select "properties"
click on the "advanced" tab
click the button near the bottom marked "environment variables"

The path to the Windows temp folder will be shown at the top part of the box. Check to see if the path actually exists or edit it to a folder of your own choosing.

Check both "TEMP" and "TMP" and, if you alter them, make them use the same folder. Okay your way out and reboot. Now try the programs you are having difficulty with.
