Yes yes, I know we won't see DX10 till Vista and G80/R600, but apparently they're working on 10.1 at the mo. The only thing I can guess they'll put in extra will be the DirectX physics API they're rumoured to be working on.

Linktastic

Please, by the way, DO NOT turn this into a Havok/ATI/Physx argument, but I'm intrigued to think how you guys think this will impact the first batch of DX10 cards around Chrimbo...

Sorry but this is from the inquirer so excuse me while i dont belive this, they also done a report with a source of 'some guy i sat next to on a plane to Japan' on how the PS3 was flawed because they didnt understand anything lol
and this one they have 'no specific details' or should that be, 'we have no details about anything but this makes a headline' lol

sorry this isnt a thing aimed at you, just the inquirer lol

Fair enough I suppose, but I find it entirely conceivable that MS is working on the next thing from DX10 considering the DX10 spec would've been finalised some time ago. I guess I'm a little surprised at the possibility of it happening so soon..

I couldn't have said it better myself. :D

Id say its fairly obvious theyre already working on the next version, same as graphics card companies are already working on cards that are like 18 months away or more.

Direct3D 10.1 Tech Preview

Direct3D 10.1 is an incremental, side-by-side update to Direct3D 10.0 that provides a series of new rendering features that will be available in an upcoming generation of graphics hardware.

* TextureCube Arrays which are dynamically indexable in shader code.
* An updated shader model (shader model 4.1).
* The ability to select the MSAA sample pattern for a resource from a palette of patterns, and retrieve the corresponding sample positions.
* The ability to render to block-compressed textures.
* More flexibility with respect to copying of resources.
* Support for blending on all unorm and snorm formats.

This tech preview provides an early look at these features and the handful of new APIs that support them. The August 2007 Direct3D 10.1 Tech Preview requires the Windows Vista SP1 Beta which will be available to MSDN subscribers once it is publicly released.

Next gen cards btw.

That's as maybe, but the OP was posting about it over a year ago.

will the current 8800 gtx cards be able to handle dx10.1 instructions? i dont want to spend good money on a card; only to realise 4-5months down the line its not good enough...

Nope they don't suport Dx10.1, you need a new card, the 9800's in November will be Dx10.1 i think. :)

I'm glad I never bought an 8800GTX now, would be well angry, I'm gonna get a 9800GTS or GTX depending on the price at launch.

Tbh I'm angry I switched from the 8800GTS now due to the fact time is starting to fly too fast since I got the 2900.
