I've removed my built in microwave because it buzzes when the door is closed and it gets really hot inside. Still works but I think it's dangerous. I believe from what I've read it might be the magnetron. The noise is loudest where the magnetron is situated. I'd love to
to keep it as I like the aesthetics and button layout but I daren't mess around opening it up and touching high voltage parts.

It's a Baumatic 25 litre capacity 900w with grill element as well, and contrary to popular opinion about this brand, it's performed flawlessly for 8 years and there's nothing else wrong with it.

So I've been looking for a new one and there's very few that will fit the cabinet height. I need one that is 46cm high including the frame. Trouble is, most I've seen online on ao, appliancesdirect and currys are 38cm including frame which would leave a gap, right? And it can't be deeper than 50cm. So I seem to be limited. There's a Zanussi which is the right size and same spec around £200, and a few brands I've never heard of. Any suggestions?

Search for Myappliances on Ebay. When my Smeg one went bang I refused to pay the prices and they were much more reasonable (I paid £125 for mines)

did it sound like this

seems on youtube theres a bunch of people that just swapped out the magnetron themselves.

so guess it must be possible to find replacements

Very similar sound but mine made the noise once the door was closed, didn't have to press any buttons. A magnetron is £80 to replace but I'm not gonna mess around with high voltage components. It's all fine now but should it happen again, I'll buy another machine.

maybe you got lucky and it was just bad vibrations. had microwaves in the past where the case screws seemed to unwind a few mm over time and simply tightening them back up eliminated any noises other than the normal operating sounds.

I guess they were probably supposed to be threadlocked but werent

As long as its unplugged and you discharge the capacitor they're quite straight forward. All I seem to change lately is mags, although I tend to do the diode at the same time.

Just to mention another symptom I was getting when it was buzzing. When I would open the door, the light would come on and the buzzing would stop. After about 5 minutes still with the door open, the turntable would start rotating very slowly all by itself until I closed the door at which point the turntable stopped and the buzzing started again. None of that is happening anymore. Looks like I've been able to avert buying another microwave. For now anyway.
