Im not sure where to start with this one.

i have been using the built in mic on my logi webcam much to peoples dismay but not so much to their complaints. apparently its clear and i come through fine.

That said, I'm purpose building a rig for the explicit intent to stream with so mic quality has to be better than just good enough.

Im inclined to do something different and move away from boom mic or integrated headset and go with a lapel mic. any reason not to other than potentially picking up sounds from cable rub and the like? I can probably be talked out of that idea quite easily for any good reason.

Any pointers appreciated, i genuinely dont know how to approach this one. Fairly convinced to use a decent pair of hifi headphones to monitor rather than anything else, purely from a fidelity perspective, probably with a cheapish external DAC. probably need to look into those too...

Rather than a lapel mic get a mod mic instead if that's they way you want to go, you can stick it to the side of your headphones.

For gaming I think a mod mic, v-moda boom pro or equivalent is a great choice because they tend to work very well for blocking enough of the background noise etc. Although they won't reach the quality levels of a boom/desktop set-up. However I think lapel mics that plug in via USB or 3.5 aux are cheap enough you might be able to trial one, but the negative I've read about them, apart from the cord rubbing, is that they can pick up a lot of background noise. It might be something that can be mitigated in software, but I'm not certain on this.
