Got an oppo with an old MacBook Pro (Mid 2013 13”) that has 8GB of RAM and a 5400 rpm HDD which is chugging along as expected.

Has anyone fitted 16GB (2 x 8GB) of RAM and an SSD to one of these?

What components did you use?

What SW did you use to clone the HDD onto the SSD? I remember Time Machine taking ages to do this when I fitted an SSD to my old pre-Unibody MBP back in the day.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, did this to my brother in laws. Just used whatever Crucial drive and memory was available for cheap. Time Machine backup to an external USB drive then restore onto the new one. Very simple and a huge upgrade noticed.

Depending on which version of the OS it’s running, you may be able to SuperDuper! or CCC from one drive to the other and just boot straight from the clone.

An SSD will be a huge upgrade.

It’s running Big Sur at the moment which I believe is the last supported version for this 2012 vintage machine.

Am I correct in thinking that swapping out the RAM first will speed up the drive cloning no end?

No, that’s unlikely to help as RAM has nothing to do with drive cloning. Time machine will also work. Be careful with drive cloning and SSD alignment coming from a HDD.
