Mid-build... need help! PC powers up, but that's it..?!?

Selling PC to sis, and simply transferring it from one case to another.

Switched on and the fans all fire up, but that's about it - can't tell if anything else is working.

Two things changed:

1) New case - could have got front panel connector postive and negatives mixed up?
2) Different PSU - was Coolermaster 700W, now generic 550W. Hardware stock E5200, 2GB, 1 HDD, 3 case fans.

Tempted to swap PSUs but don't wanna faff with this if someone can think of another reason.

At moment, once switched on, monitor blank, case power light on, fans spinning; reset switch does nothing, holding down power switch does nothing - have to power off at mains to switch off.

Schoolboy error?? HELP PLEASE :confused:
 
The front panel switch is just a switch - so polarity shouldn't matter.

Is the GPU installed properly and all the power connectors in the motherboard and graphics card?

Posting a photo of the motherboard area and the connections may be a good idea and allow us to get to the bottom of the problem faster.

However, my spidey sense tingles when I hear "Generic 550W" PSU, I can only imagine what it can really output before exploding.
 
Positive and negative connections only really matter with LED's but generally speaking black wires are for Ground / GND / Negative and coloured wires are for positive. Check your connections and ensure you have the CPU and/or GPU power connected and try 1 stick of RAM at a time. These are vague suggestions based on what you have told us.

Shall I go for broke, and re-install original Coolermaster 700W and try that?

Likely actually. If risers are installed in the wrong postition, or poorly placed / board installed, then it can short out the thousands of soldered connections on the back. I have done it myself. As have many here.

To check, you build it on a square of cardboard (insulated see!) the favourite being the box it came in. With no metal, there can be no shorting!

Also, check the cpu cooler (if it has a backplate) is ok.

Never done it, can be completely avoided by counting the number of holes in the mobo, taking care when installing the
stand-offs and offering the board up a few times to be double certain before fixing the board in :)

WAIT. There was one extra stand-off I installed as per the manual... when I installed board realised I didn't need it.

Oh boy... I bet that's it!

Will continue putting back into Antec 300, and should work I hope.

Just built the system in my sig. Plugged the power lead in, nothing. Plugged the power lead into the display. Nothing.

Changed the fuse in the plug, plugged it onto the system, nothing.

Worried.

Turns out the extension lead is on a remote control socket which was switched off by wife but that's 20 mins of my life I'll never get back :D
