Hi,

Sorry longish post ahead.

Did not realise there was such an extensive section in the forum for mobiles (I'm in the pc hardware section mostly) so hopefully will get some good tips.

My O2 contract is due for upgrade next month and having rang them it would appear that the retention dept will be flexible even though I have a lowly tariff.

I have my wife's old Wildfire and want a decent replacement without going 'high end' as I'm restricted by cost.

I was interested in the Desire S, Xperia Arc s, and Xperia Ray which I can get free but having had my hands on the Xperia Arc S today thought it felt a bit cheap (plastic).
The Xperia Ray looked damn nice though.
Desire S I have always liked but noticed a comment here saying it's not great.

In your opinion would the upcoming Xperia P or U be worthwhile considering when they come out next month or will they have a price premium attached being 'new'?

Thanks

I'd wait for the moment, as the new Xperia phones are due out very soon and the new HTC range are out in about a month.

One of those should suit you and should be available fairly cheaply, the Xperia P as you've mentioned will no doubt be worth a look.

What is your 'lowly' tariff? Nearly all phones bar the iPhone are available from various retailers on extremely 'cheap' contracts (£20~/month).

Hi,

I have a company mobile too so I actually reduced my own tariff down to O2's minimum monthly contract with a small data add on, so most 'better' phone's would have to be paid for on my tariff.
But retention say they can 'do something' about removing the payment for the phone as long as I don't aim too high.
O2 seem to have a few tiers if you have to pay for a phone of £80 (which I can get free) and £105 being the lower ones.

Ah I should have said my broadband is with O2 so get a discount having a mobile contract with them, so prefer not to move.
Hopefully the Xperia P will be out by the time my contract is renewable but guess the new HTC's will be out of reach.
Thanks for the comment.

Hi after a bit of searching it looks like I can get the following phones free and keep the same low tariff although it will mean new contract so new number.

Xperia Ray
HTC Desire S
Samsung Galaxy W
Xperia Arc S with perhaps a small amount for the handset

I really don't think I will be able to stretch to the new Sony's or HTC One's unfortunately considering it as an additional second phone.
Not been able to find confirmed release dates for the lower spec HTC One V (Desire S equivalent???)

Is there anything I should be aware of regarding the above handsets (suspect build quality etc)?

Also this is through buymobilephones.net so it is the first time I have not gone directly through the main network supplier (O2 in this instance).

Thanks for any help.

Not sure if you saw the Ray in person but it really is a diddy little phone. Was looking at that phone when i was picking a phone for myself, it looked all good til i saw it in person and realised just how small it is!

Yeah I had a look at Carphone WH and it feels solid but certainly on the smaller size (my current screen is small though HTC Wildfire)

Well I actually just ordered the Xperia S as the deals on buymobilephone.net just seem really good with line rental discount.
I have to send vouchers and copies of bills but I'm getting a nice phone by the looks of it.

Xperia S thread here pushed me in the right direction thanks.
