Hi Guys

I've a Crosshair Hero VI MB with 32gb Ram (2x16) but with having so many windows open (day trader) I seem to be hitting ram limits.

The board will only take max 3200mhz ram But if i'm paying out for 64Gb I'd like the option to move it onto the next upgrade which should be a 5950x when availability arises.

Can I get much faster ram but lower the speed to 3200 or is that like taking injectors out of a v8 to save fuel.
I've vengance LPX in currently and looking at similar

Thanks
Matt

Ok so. turns out I had some 8 pack dark pro Ram
I've now got 64 gb Vengeance LPX (2x32GB)3600mhz

Aaaand I'm not having fun. Dang Ryzen

I'm getting mouse stuttering and slow load times. No BSOD's though

I've just manually set some timings after running through Thaiphoon burner and Dram ryzen thingy.

CPUz is still giving me DRAM freq of 1064mhz despite setting at 3200 I would expect 1600mhz right

Can you just run them at an XMP setting in BIOS or you mixing brand/speeds?

Just running a matched pair of 32gb sticks.
Its DOCP in the crosshair. I've tried that and having issues

I think the 1064MHz is just the SPD speed. Can you post a screenshot from CPUz?

The "stuttering" seems to come and go.

Ok, so the memory is running at 2133MHz but the timings are 15 15 15 36 51. Did you set these manually? The XMP profile should be 18 22 22 42 64 @3600MHz and 1.35V.

Can you try setting it to the XMP profile settings? If you set it using DOCP then something is clearly not right because it's not using the XMP profile settings.

I would check for BIOS update. When I first got my B450 board the next two updates sorted all memory issues for me with notes on the site 'improved system stability' and added more compatible XMP variants.

Yep, we are suggesting (OP) you check this out and stop messing with the manual Thaiphoon method as it should be stable on defaults first before you start tinkering.

What CPU are you using?

I dont really want to overclock the ram just getting it running at stock.

I tried XMP/DOCP and it was stuttering so thats why I started to "tinker"

Specs are
Crosshair heroVi
Ryzen 7 1700x
64gb (2x32gb) Vengeance LPXX 3600mhz CMK64GX4M2D3600C18

Latest BIOS.

I'll set everything back to stock again.

First gen ryzen is quite finicky with ram so you could try manually setting something like 2800mhz and seeing if that will stick as a temp fix atleast till you upgrade the CPU which should enable you to run XMP or at the very least 3200mhz.

Yeah I noticed!!

I've set it at 2800mhz now and it seems better... It can run 3200 as that was what I've taken out but. It wasn't really speed I was after. I was hitting 90% usage quite often and was getting real bad slow downs whilst it caught back up. I've way too many browser windows open with way too many tabs. Running 6 monitors.

The upgrade is planned for when stock gets better.

Lets see what the next few hours do

If it's stable, you can try going up to 3200MHz. I'm not very familiar with Ryzen but looking around, your CPU should be able to run 3200MHz ram. Good luck!

3200mhz was the speed of the outgoing ram. Which I'm sure it was set at.. But I set this new Ram at 3200mhz and was having issues. Its fine now at 2800. Which its showing in CPU-Z as 1396 mhz (dual) so thats ok.. However when set at 3200 it was only showing 1067 so even though set higher was showing lower...

Currently
18 22 22 42 (66)
But stable and doesn't seem slow... No stuttering for sure.. I may try 3kmhz later if i get the time

Cheers

Well if it's stable that's good. It may just be the CPU memory controller being unhappy with 3200MHz. And to be honest, there isn't a huge difference between 2800MHz and 3200MHz. If it won't run faster, you could try reducing some of the timings while at 2800MHz. Since the ram is specified 3600MHz C18, it might be happy running as low as C14 at 2800MHz. Though again, the performance boost won't be much and might not be worth the time trying to optimise the timings.

First gen Ryzen is REAL fussy about RAM and speed. The 8-pack stuff was Samsung B die (it was the best you could get for compatability) - I suspect you'll be stuck between 2600 - 3000 with your Corsair RAM (if you want it fairly stable).
