Hi guys.

Long time lerker, first time poster.

I built my first ever PC in 2014

I use my PC for gaming and a bit of photoshop work.

My current set up

I5-4690k
8GB DDR3 Ram
Z97 MSI Motherboard
Coolermaster evo 212 air cooler
RTX2080 FE (swapped out from an MSI GTX970)
Samsung 500gb ssd
1TB HHD
EVGA G2 650 PSU
Dell S2716DG 1440p 144Hz G-Sync Monitor

I am incrementally upgrading my pc.

My friend is bringing me a 9700k over from Canada next month.

I would like to overclock my cpu and gpu with slight overclocks so I can play on ultra settings at 1440p on AAA titles.

For noise and aesthetics I will build my first custom loop in the new year

For my new motherboard I think I will be going for either an Asus STRIX Z390 or a Z390 Maximus XI Hero.

First question is what do I get extra on the Hero over the STRIX? Is it worth the extra £40ish?

Also, which ram would be recommended? 16GB, no more than £200. Would like some RGB that can be controlled by motherboard.

And lastly, is it worth getting an m.2 drive over the Samsung SSD?

I would like to get 4 years of use out of this build.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post and look forward to the advice.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the reply.

I looked at Gigabyte boards but stepped away due to the location of the USB-C header being a little more central than I’d have liked (unlike the ASUS boards where it’s located on the right hand edge).

I was looking into the Aorus 16GB kit but saw that despite Gigabyte reassuring consumers that they work with all brands of motherboards, reality is the two dummy sticks appear to have issues with other brands which makes this not an option for me on this occassion.

Also forgot to mention colour scheme...going to keep it neutral; black, grey, silver, platinum and will add some custom sleeved extensions when the watercooling goes in. Luckily the majority of the Z390 follow the theme I’m after.
