Midweek Football Thread - 18th/19th

LOL. Just checked Sky Sports player ratings for Hull and Turner who made 2 or 3 costly mistakes got the same rating as Insua who was superb in our game :o
You know how players seem to cost more because they're English? This is how. Overrated by the media because they're afraid to back down on someone they've quietly hyped.

Hull City fans have been oblivious to their defensive frailties for ages now, it's wound me up no end. They bang on about Turner for England, or how good Myhill is, or how Dawson and Ashbee have stepped up their game with the move up the league, or how Gardener (or Zayatte before him) is the perfect foil for Turner, whilst somehow ignoring that they conceded the most goals last season (or it might have been second highest). All too busy banging on about the need for a striker or wingers or creative players, as though that will stop the rot.

Excellent result for Burnley, they proved last season that they're not afraid to take on the big boys and win:)

It's starting to look like the Owen gamble isn't going to pay off, he's spurned at least 3 fairly simple chances against very average defences already and I thought his lack of form was just a confidence issue which should've been sorted out by Fergie's faith in him.
If he doesn't hit any decent form soon Fergie will have to explore other options and that could mean the end of Owen (again?) which will be a shame, speaking as an England fan of course.

Yep, people said it was his fitness and just getting back to playing but hes had plenty of time, hes lost that edge and United should have gone for a world class striker.

Rooney missed chances aswell, as did Berbatov, don't forget that Owen DID score and was onside, but was called offside.

The teams just set up wrong, Rooney has not looked as good as he did with a run of games at left wing last season, for a long long time. He was consistantly great every single game there, while as a striker his form is on/off, because he only works well their when he gets the ball and can run, which he didn't get a chance to last night.

When Fergie, the fans, and Rooney all spot the fact he's about 5 times as good and far more consitant on the wing, the team will do better in general. Owen's also far more suited to having two decent wingers with pace to get beyond the team and get him those tap in type goals RVN made his career on.

THen also Fergie made the Wenger mistake, resting players for no reason so just because you think you can beat a team with ease, is stupid. Wenger if we had, say, Hull one week and Chelsea the next, will play a weak team against Hull, lose 3 points, and play a strong team against Chelsea, and lose 3 points. If anything, make certain the 3 easy points and rest players against Chelsea if you have to, you still end up with 3 points. THe difference is your reserve players against Hull feel pressured, they are expected to win, try to hard and suck. Against Chelsea, they are expected to lose, theirs no pressure, they go out and play and might surprise you with a result.

Owen will be good for Utd, he'll even score a bunch of goals, there was just little movement, width or creativity last night. Berbatov got lots of the ball when he came on, he's perfect for tight situations where close control is needed, however that little fast midget to make runs for him to dink the ball over the defence too, was missing when he was on.

I also still think Hull, Pompie and Blackburn for the drop, unless Pompie get their money and buy the right players.

Just seen the goal.

Are you clueless about goalkeeping or having a laugh?

You mean the cross he didnt come for that all the defenders were waiting for him to collect but didnt? Which lead to burnley pinging the ball into the area four or five times on the trot? THAT cross? Or a different one?

He's clueless about football fullstop ;)

Yes of course. £100 that united finish no higher than third place and end the season with no cups either. How about it? Any of you confident enough in this side to bet real money? Its a broad enough bet, you cant loose.

Well played Burnley :D I think the problem is that man u just don't have as much quality on the pitch as they have in previous seasons - especially in midfield. I looked at the team and there were only really evra and rooney who I think are really quality players, everyone else is a bit meh. And I have to say it, Ronaldo would not have missed that penalty... I reckon man u will finish 3rd this year.

Knew Man Utd's midfield weren't going to be as good, that's 2 championship teams who drifted through Man Utd's midfield for 90 minutes without too much bother, would never have happened in years gone by! Ferg will probably buy an awesome CM now though

Very annoyed about last night's result - but doesnt really mean that much

Utd are pretty notorious for starting the season slowly and to catch up by Christmas

I'm talking about the goal....

The ball was crossed into an area where the keeper wouldn't be expected to come for it. It fell to Blake and he scored...

Please tell me you're not referring to that.

Oh yes I certainly think after 2 short sub appearances and 60 mins last night we can entirely write him off....not.

The chances last night, the first was a deflected cross that took the ball away from him, and the second which, while it was an ok chance was a header, hardly Owen's strength.
