just building another system and gonna get vista and as im tight i would have gone for vista home basic .
i mainnly want to use the comp for gaming and surfing , for which ill use ff , i presume that basic has media player aswell

so is there anything that will help me in pro or even premium which would make me get it and by the way these forums have helped a lot so thanks every body

Basic does include media player but doesn't include media center (for pc->xbox\tv hookups) although it can be done. It also doesn't include the Aero theme and all the nice 3d flashy interface. The thrid main thing i think it misses is there's no 64bit DVD in the box, you gotta send away for it which is a pain.

Personally home premium is what i'd choose. I did buy ultimate but it's really overkill unless you want some of the business features that arn't in home.

Yes, that is the 64bit version. OEM. However I would still agree with, Vtec9K, Home Premium is really the only upgrade. I wouldn't call Windows Vista Basic any sort of 'upgrade'. It's very boring to look at, and 'feels' crap. :(. Like, Vtec9K I also got Windows Vista Ultimate. Which is good. But I've used basic, so can tell you what it's like. :p
