If I have all gigabit devices going through a gigabit switch with Cat6 cables and a router connected that only has a 10/100 ports then will the gigabit devices all connect through the switch at gigabit speeds, or does it go through the router?!

Not really a networking expert as you may be able to tell... :p

Thanks,

Neil.

anything on the switch will talk at gb, it will only slow down if it has to talk to the router for internet access or if you have plugged a device into the router...

in a small office I often stick in a GB switch and hang the router off one port with nothing attached to it - people in the office can talk to their lcoal server and (not so importantly) printers and other workstations

Local traffic within your own subnet/vlan will be switched, not routed so you'll get the gigabit connectivity. Anything that has to go outside of your local subnet will traverse the router and hence be limited at 100Mb/s.

I think I understood the question correctly. :p

EDIT: Damn, beaten.

(cannot edit posts so posting again)

when I say slow down I mean it will still run at GB only it will be doing a lot of waiting for the slow 100mb router to speak back to it...
