I have a prehistoric Athlon 64 Processor at 3200 + and an Abit KV8 Pro motherboard. Don't really play games on PC anymore, just surf and MS Office etc.

I have built a Core i7 system in the last couple of weeks for father in law and a Phenom II X3 720 AM3 system for a mate. It made me realise how slow my system is.

I have a new baby on the way so my other half would not take too kindly to me spending £5-600 quid on a new system.

I would consider second hand (although can't get into MM yet due to low post count :( ) but looking for a reasonable CPU/MB combination for £120- £150

Thanks

Stewart

Isn't the Athlon 64 Processor at 3200 + a good CPU then? I though it ran at 3.2?

been good for me, but running Vista, until I removed it ran like a dog, and with Windows 7 which I much prefer (for whatever reasons it seems better to me than Vista) the CPU sits at 100% for the least little thing

A stamped addressed envolope and 68p to cover a small tupperware box lol

your a gent sir, most helpful. Not sure how we PM on here to pass address details or e-mail addresses?

What M/B would you recommend for this? Would a P43 be a good choice or overkill? If I had a decent m/b then I could always go to an E7 or E8 series in the not too distant future?

I reckon a P43 would be over the top for this cpu (it has a stock FSB of 800) unless you plan to stick with the LGA775 form CPUs for a couple of years yet, in which case I'd say go with a P45 (afaik the P43 are the ones with intergrated video? If your going to use a PCIe card anyway I'd go with one without onboard gfx. I am no expert, so if someone would like to correct please do! :D)

I'm a noob to this forum too, dunno how PMs and stuff works. I have a look into it

ok, cheers

I would consider an ATX (not micro unless there is no difference and it fits into an ATX box) board if one existed with integrated graphics, again I could upgrade at a later date. Can't find one though other than ATX. Then agin, I could still get a decent 4850 PCI-E card for not much more combined with the new MB to near £150

Oh the joys, I have the pukin nights to look forward to.

can't get it to work, here is my email XXX

Once you have it I will take out.

I would have to agree with d brennen, that upgrading to Linux OS like Ubuntu would be a great option for a speed boost, especially if you don't game,, I would have Ubuntu as my main OS if I didn't use my PC for gaming...

Also your 3200+ only runs @ 2GHz not 3.2GHz...

I do, thanks, will my enermax 600w noisetaker have sufficient connections for this an other M/B's for Intel Core 2 Duo?

From the brief google search it seems your Enermax would do the job nicely. I have a similar one which runs 24/7 for the last 18months silent as a whisper. I'm a big fan of Enermax PSUs.
