Migrating Linux to New Hardware

Hello,

I have an old machine which has been happily running FC4 updated. I've spent an age configuring this machine getting everything to work. However over time I've now realised the hardware is too old performance wise for what I want it to do so am going to upgrade the Mobo/CPU/RAM.

I want to keep the same installation, so only a change of hardware is required (updgrading from old Athlon to Athlon XP 2500+)

Im worried that the machine will no longer boot once it has new hardware...

So whats the best way to migrate my existing installation to new hardware ?

Thanks.

Linux is quite robust and should handle a hardware upgrade with no problems.

Before you attempt it, I would make a disk image of your current installation and burn it to a couple of CDs or even better DVD [or put it on an entirely different HDD].
At least then if anything bad did happen you have a backup. However I suspect Linux will just take a bit longer to boot as it loads new drivers and off you go.

Yip - should boot with no problems at all (linux is good like that, unlike Windows)... although As SiriusB suggests - can't hurt to make a backup ;)

I wouldn't make any system wide changes without a backup!

I once adjusted my resolution so high i couldnt see anything and I couldnt work out how to get it back! I ended up reinstalling the lot...thankfully it was only a test!!
