Has anyone ever tried moving a RAID array to an older/less capable LSI card? I've got a pair of RAID1 arrays hanging off an LSI 9265-8i equivalent and am looking to move them to an LSI 9240-8i equivalent. I'm not using the RAID5 capabilities of this card so I might as well use where it's needed. Anyone know if MSM will just let me import them?

Most of the info I've read suggests that you can upgrade the card and the existing array should be detected on bootup by the card. My raid 5 array quite happily remained perfectly functional when I added an intel sas expander to the mix alongside an old 8888elp. Not quite the same as changing HBA obviously, but I was expecting to have to recreate the array.

I've added expanders before. They happily all seem to work transparently, with all arrays staying intact. I'm going to risk it this weekend and swap out the controllers. If they were vanilla HBAs, I'd be less worried! But this is effectively a downgrade, going from a full hardware RAID card to a controller with no XOR hardware on board. It's basically a HBA with an LSI abstraction layer in between, and I'm relying on that to recognise and use the RAID config data stored on the drives already. Should be interesting!
