I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't locate in the forums.

Bascially I've bought my wife a new laptop and she wants to keep her files ect from the old machine.

What's the best way to migrate the system or applications and files to the new laptop?

What is the old and new laptop models? Do you have anything like One Drive set up already on the old laptop?

Assuming Windows I would probably set up a backup task on to a blank externall HDD on the old computer with all the old files on it and then restore from that backup on the new laptop.

Moving programs can be wildly variable so we would also need to know what programs you are looking at doing this with as it may well be a case by case answer.

Don't migrate progs, as they need to install.

Copy the usual \my documents under each user. Also sign in and sync browsers so when you sign in the new laptop browser it'll transfer cookies, bookmarks etc.

Laplink PC Mover - been around for decades, still kept up to date. Pro version can be found for under 14 nicker
