Migrating. When to cancel with current ISP?

Ok, so I'm currently with Tiscali and have been waiting for Be to be enabled in my area (which is supposed to be today!). So how to I go about changing?

I know I'll have to phone up and get my MAC. Does it matter when I do that? It doesn't 'expire' or anything? Eg. If I got the MAC today, but didn't sign up with Be until a few weeks later, it won't have changed?

Then I'll have to give the MAC to Be so they can migrate me. How to I go about canceling with Tiscali? Do I have to give it a few weeks after canceling with them before I can switch? When I give my MAC to Be how long does it take to migrate me? Would I be able to connect straight away, or would that again take a few weeks?

Basically what's the easiest way with minimal downtime?

Hope that makes sense.
Thanks. :)

Hi

A MAC is valid for 30 days and with most providers you also usually have to give a 30 day cacnellation notice so if you get your MAC from Tiscali in the next few days you can then give it to BE at anytime in the next 30 days but I would suggest giving it at least 7 days before it is due to expire.

When you migrate you may experience a few minutes to a few hours of no server but that should be it. Obviously once you have migarted you will need to connect with the new username and password for BE and not the old ones for Tiscali

Hope that helps

Don't, at any point, mention the word 'cancel' to Tiscali (or any other provider you might be migrating from). This would probably cause them to put a cease on the line and you'd have to get it re-activated and pay a new fee & have loads of downtime.

Once you've used your MAC (which has a 30 day validity, as mentioned), the previous ISP should automatically just stop charging you.

Yep this is correct. if you cancel with the previous ISP before the migration has gone through the cease request will block the migation and you would have the hassle as described above.

Just phone up and request a MAC code, then you have 30 days to use it, if you don't use it in those 30 days then it becomes invalid, and your service just continues with whoever you are on as normal.

If your going to use the MAC code, you just contact the provider you wish to go to and give them the code, they will give you your new login details etc...for them, and also tell you how long it will take (normally 7 days) then in 7 days time you get switched over to them, but within those 7 days you are still on your old provider so are still connected and able to use the internet as normal, then once the switch has been done you will find that you cant log on to your old provider, will probably say username/password invalid or something, so all you have to do is enter your new login details into your router/modem etc... that you got off the new provider and hit connect, and thats it you are back on, but on your new provider, so the only downtime you have is how long it takes you to enter your new details into your modem/router and hit connect. :)
