I'm just wondering if I can ask for my MAC code while within a 12 month contract?

I know that a MAC code can be valid for 30 days so let's say if I ask AOL for it on the 2nd May (my contract expires on 29th May) can they refuse to give it to me even if I tell them that I won't break the terms of my contract and migrate earlier than the 29th May?

I want to ask for it as early as possible as I want to get everything sorted on the 29th May (or 30th May at the latest) so as to avoid making another payment to AOL on 2nd June.

Has anyone ever had a MAC code off AOL to migrate to another ISP?
I know that they are registered with the voluntary 'Broadband migration - Industry code of practice' but I don't hold out much hope as a few years ago I requested that my payment method be changed from a debit card payment to direct debit but what they did was cancel my debit card method and not use the direct debit details I gave them resulting in me being without internet access until I rang them

I'm still paying by debit card even now as they say that because I originally signed up for the FREE monthly trial back in 2001 then I have no right to change payment method

So what I will have to do once I have migrated is to cancel my debit card via my bank just in case further payments are taken as I have read some people complaining that AOL have continued to bill them even after migrating to another ISP

I am planning to migrate to Zen by the way.

p.s. if anyone is wondering why I don't ask AOL directly then they obviously haven't tried to ring (so called) customer service based in India

Update:

As I have never used a MAC code before (and I don't trust AOL's Indian call centre's advice), is it true what they told me?

They said that even though my contract wasn't up until the 29th May, they would be willing to give me my MAC code but after 3 days my contract would be cancelled and I would still have to pay this month's payment (which I don't mind as after all I am still within the 12 month period) and I would then have 30 days in which to use it.

I asked if they could keep my service active until the 29th May but they said they can't do that so is this standard practice?

If so then I may as well wait for my contract to expire and then ask for my MAC code as I expect I will then be given 3 days of internet access before my contract is cancelled.
By then, hopefully, I will have migrated to an alternative ISP and not have to go without internet access for too long!

It's hardly cancelled - you've just paid it off.

No. The connection should be active till, er, you migrate...

Thanks Tolien for your above advice as after reading it I have contacted AOL again and when I was put through this time rather than listen to the bull I asked to be put into contact with a supervisor.

He reassured me that he has generated a MAC code for me and apologised for me receiving misleading advice!

I made it crystal clear that I didn't want my account cancelled and was only asking for my MAC code to migrate.
He said I should receive it within 48 hours and so all I can do is hope that he keeps to his word!

p.s. according to him I am still only able to get 1 Mb and he hasn't heard of Max DSL which is a different story when I rang a few days ago and was told that I had to wait for the Max DSL upgrade
