I stumbled across this article about Simon Cowell begging people to raise funds for his celebrity friends who have lost their houses due to the LA fires.

He's literally begging the public, who are undoubtably poorer than him or any of his celebrity mates.

The lack of self awareness is astounding. But he's not alone in a trend that started a long time ago.

I'm thinking of millionaire youtube and twitch streamers who still have their donations function on.

The sad thing is Joe Bloggs will make himself skint thinking his donation will make any difference to the streamer.

I don't know if the streamers realise they are millionaires or are doing it out of greed. But it's one of the modern spectacles I think, to see a poor man feeling he has to hand over money to a millionaire*.

*Some streamers are self aware and have turned off the donations facility.

i think he is asking to donate to red cross who are helping rather than residents, if he was asking to donate to fund my mates new luxury mansion build then it would be incredibly distasteful yes

You've had a reading comprehension fail here, he's asking people to donate to the Red Cross.

Also, I realise LA might seem like a mythical place full of celebrities but it's not just A list actors who live there, plenty of non-celebs lost their homes and for some of them (because of price controls/cancelled policies) they weren't insured ergo they're not necessarily millionaires anymore.

I think perhaps an organisation that's helping with some supplies for people who have had everything burn to the ground just days ago would tend to be a reasonable thing to promote, especially for someone like him who lives locally.

The best one I saw was Bella Hadid begging for people to donate for her makeup artist who needed something like a $40k op.
Someone worked out that with her net worth, if she'd paid for it it was the equivalent to the average person paying like £15

The gofundme things are often comically bad, especially when celebs do them.

Other ones are things like "Tarquin was on his gap yah in Thailand and fell off a scooter, he didn't bother with insurance so pls donate so we can raise 5k for medical bills etc.."

That's the sort of thing that they ought to take out a loan for and/or young Tarquin ought to pledge to repay everyone who donates.

I’m sure this is in no way linked to reports of the hydrants being dry.

That is bad/typical selfish celebs many of whom would no doubt virtue signal for green causes when convenient.

However, the far bigger culprits are the wealthy families farming avocados in the state - one lb of avocado alone requires 74 gallons of water to produce and they're well protected politically.

It's not like the richest state the richest country on the planet located right by a large body of water can't necessarily have celebs in massive mansions with swimming pools, hot tubs and oversized whirlpool baths/waterfall showers etc.. consuming large amounts of water but rather the local politicians have made their own decision re: infrastructure (or lack of it) and indeed what to prioritise.

Opened the link and first thought wow wtf happened to his face? Looks disfigured.. must have gone for some plastic surgery to look younger with all his money but damn it looks weird.

it's been altered so much it looks like it's just been draped on and glued in place.
but they forgot to line everything up properly.

I misread that he was directing it to the Red Cross.

I just hope the help goes to the people who can't afford to move out and get at least a temporary place.

It would be bad if the Red Cross were helping millionaires out.

Go fund me is one of those platforms that makes me lose just a little more faith in humanity.

Firstly a company skimming off quite a chunk as what must be fairly near pure profit.
Second: people wanting money directly for bad life choices. Like the old woman who went to USA for a holiday, seriously ill, didn't take out insurance and thus a go fund me was born.
Third and the most annoying. The people who donate to these sob stories vs giving to a properly vetted charity.

At least those who pay are paying by choice.

Sounds reasonable to me

'Like a lot of other people I want to do something to help, I've done some research and it looks like the Red Cross organisation is doing an awful lot.
'I've attached the link, I'm going to make a donation, I strongly ask other people like myself, who can do something to help, to help, because there's an awful lot of people right now who are going to need help now, and in the future.

Had a few pop up recently of 20 something couples asking for 2k for IVF. Bizarre tbh
