Hi all

Gonna get a new desktop and lappy any day now.....

First off is the lappy, I'll be doing some video encoding (converting divx to DVD & vice versa).....re-sampling music bitrates, plus some photoshop and Winrar usage.

I currently use an Athlon64 3000 with 1gig of ram on my desktop PC. What is the cheapest minimum CPU/ram combo to be at least as quick as my current setup?

Next up will be my Desktop, and I'm going to go over to the dual core or quad core Intels as my main PC in a week or two but occasionally I'll be using the lappy, so don't want to be strumming my fingers waiting for things to get done after using the faster desktop.....

Don't need super-duper graphics as I'm not playing games on either machine.

I'm looking to spend about between 5-£600 each on both the laptop and desktop. Can build the desktop myself if it's cheaper.....

thanks for any advice. ;)

You could get a core 2 duo laptop for under 500 notes, and that should outpace your AMD. I would have thought most c2ds or turions would be able to keep pace with your old rig.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm looking for a dual core lappy - it's just which one!

I thought all dual core chips would outdo my current set up but saw on notebookcheck.net that it said of the T2300 chip that it was: "The weak type T2300 is apt for office applications and for surfing." That's why I thought I'd ask which dual core would meet my needs....

cheers

try and avoid a coreduo chip if you can, the core2duo is substantially faster, c2d>mobile x2>cd

if you just encoding get the fastest cpu/ram (1gig recomended) you can for the cash you want to spend. the rest is irrelevant.

"The weak type T2300 is apt for office applications and for surfing" this is typical journalistic rubbish. the 80486 DX4 100mhz is also apt for surfing and word processing. and its about 40 kajillion times slower :/

Yes, I'm aware of the faster c2d, thanks for pointing it out though ;) I've seen a well specced new Dell 6400 on ebay but it only has in Intel GMA950 graphics chip - no bother to me as I said coz I'm not going to play games but, my son might possibly use it occasionally if the main PC isn't available, to go on line and play World of Warcraft. Will this graphics chip be able to handle WoW?

Ok - thanks Amonlym ;)

So really, it wouldn't be fair to him to get that lappy then if it's gonna play real flakey

What is the minimum mobile graphics chip I should be looking at to play WoW then (this is the ONLY game that he plays so that's all it needs to be able to handle...)

I say minimum because I don't want to spend any more on a super-dooper GPU when it's only going to be used now and again, as I'm looking to get the lappy for 5-600 quid max.

Just as long as he can play WoW at a decent enough res for when he does use the lappy!

Thanks

Moggsy

How about this spec for £530.....should be quick enough for me for the encoding and stuff and it's got a card that should handle WoW for the lad too....
