Evening fellow forum folk!

I have recently started putting pen to paper in the form of mind maps to aid in planning, organising, making decisions and generally oiling the ole thought processes. Im finding it quite a nice way to do things, different to lists.

For those of you who do not know what a mind map is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindmap

Now iv decided that i may want to do some more important work this way, work that i may want to save, distribute and back up. Therefore iv decided to abandon my beloved pen and paper and move to either offline/online software or an app (as i have an Iphone, Ipad, Imac, Air).

Does anyone else mindmap/tried mindmapping?

Does anyone use such software which they would recommend?

Free software obviously would be a lot better! Im not really sure what features i require other than the basics other than the facility to password protect your 'thoughts'.

there are some great ones for the ipad. Can;t remember the names, but they work really intuitively with the large touch interface. Omni software might do one.

An app that works on my Ipad, Imac and Mac book Air and which syncs between the 3 devices and allows you to password protect the content would be spot on.

I thought that 'Inspiration' was the main one.

www.inspiration.com

That was the main one we sold at my old place. Mind Manager to a lesser extent.

Oh and yeah, apparently we have to say 'mindmapping' instead of 'brainstorming' nowadays coz the latter is politically incorrect

Freemind if you want free.

If you're willing to pay, I think iMindmap is a little better (better integration of colour and typography, which is important for memory retention), and touted by the man himself: Tony Buzan.

Ahh what's the difference please, Whitecrook?

I remember in my old school back in the mid-90s, the teacher will say "let's have a brainstorming session". He/she'll turn a fresh A1 sheet on the flip-chart, start a keyword in the middle in a bubble then other words will stem from it in bubbles around the middle word, with arrows/lines between the bubbles. That's how it looks in the software too, except that in the 2000s it's called mindmapping instead of brainstorming.

We use "Mindgenius" here at work - however unfortunately it is not a free solution.
A lot of our users did a lot of experimenting with Mind Mapping software and this is the one they all decided offered everything required.

Well worth looking at if you don't mind paying for software - obviously not the right solution if you want free.

brainstorming is just coming up with ideas. You can record these ideas many ways. Writing a list is one way. Drawing a mind map is another way. One benefit of the mind map vs the list is that a mind map shows visually how the ideas in 'the list' are related.
