In an attempt to become more active in my step daughters life and participate a bit more, we have come up with a suggestion of playing minecraft together.

She has been running a lite version on her iPad for a week or so and really likes it. I have watched a couple of youtube videos on it and even though it is not really my kind of thing, it is worth it to find a common interest.

So I really do not know much about MC other than £17 for a copy of the PC version and that you can play single / multiplayer

So could someone answer for me the following.

1. Can I set up a multiplayer world for the 2 of us only ?

2. Can you set up multiplayer in survival mode ?

3. I assume I will need to buy 2 copies, one for each PC ?

Many thanks, as I said, never even touched or looked at MC until yesterday.

As Tune said, yes to all of your questions. They are really easy to do/setup too. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the game itself. People just look at the graphics and that it has a young audience and forget that it can be for adults too.

It's basically digital lego, who doesn't love lego :D

what dirtybeatfreak said basically thumps up.

also worth noting is that with the PC version you can introduce mods to the game and gretl change how and what you do in game.
there are a number of differnt youtuber's which it might be worth watching, direwolf20 (seems family frendly) yogscast (more adult) are two well known ones.
ever wanted to go to the moon or mars? now you can!
wanted to get in to the arcane magics or the nano machine technologie there a mod for that to.

ars magica is all the rage at the moment.

i'm playing vanilla minecraft with a friends 9yr old to entertain and they love it :) they are very keen to get in to the mods :) ow and blow stuff up :P

only prerequisit is to have an imagination it will help immensely with this sandbox game.

I dont know how the hell young kids play Minecraft. Its one of the most complex 'games' I have ever player, if not the most complex.

e.g. surviving a first night means learning to craft (which I needed to look on a wiki to do) finding wood, food, making tools, finding coal for torches, etc etc. That's without getting into the complicated stuff like smelting, potions, farming, redstone creations etc. It is a fantastic, but highly addictive game. I found myself playing from 10pm-5am one night and realising I had to get up for work in 2 hours and I had been in caves mining for diamonds for 7 hours!! At this point I deleted it and never played it again

1. there's an open to lan mode would be fine, although you can download and run a server for free. its tricky to set up you can customise specific usernames to be able to join [aka whitelisting] but you'd only need that for internet play otherwise lan is ok.

2. yes, you can even switch between creative [ type: /gamemode c], adventure [gamemode a] and survival [gamemode s] mode using console commands in-game [but only if your opped on a server]

3. you'll need 2 accounts yes, but once you've got an account and bought the game you can re-download as much as you want [very handy for if you mess up whilst modding]

if you want some tutorials, wiki's and youtube are the best bet. youtubers such as direwolf20 and the yogscast as suggested by emohug are an entertaining way to learn the basics and get inspiration, you'll be building nuclear reactors in no time.

only advice: beware dem creepers!

Isnt there something like 'realms' now that allows you to host a server with mojang?

I have heard its about £8 a month but if you split this with 8+ people then its only £1 a month

edit - yep 20 people on a server, 10 people playing at once

i just bought a server from creeperhost, with the summer deals it was about £12 for 3 months (rises after that of course). i am a total server noob but managed to get it working so my brother and i can play on it (the modded ftb monster version). really easy to do, there are also loads of hosts. so yeah, lots of options!

dunno about you guys, but i just run my own. once you've got port forwarding set up its pretty easy if its just for a few mates.

i run it on the same machine as my client, but if you have a spare pc or your own server you can use that. you don't need to leave it running 24/7 if you want to save power
