minecraft easy question

Forgive my ignorance regarding this game, but it really isn't my cup of tea so I know diddly squat about what's capable.

My little 10 year old is hooked on minecraft and wants to buy her best friend minecraft for her birthday so they can play together. Now she seems to think that this is only possible if they are connected on the same Wi-Fi. Is this true? Or can they play together in their world at the same time while her best friend is still at home?

You could setup a server using Minecraft Realms and that would allow them and only them to play online at the same time in different houses. Realms cost £8 p/m

You can set up a Minecraft server that's run from one of your own computers fairly easily, I'm not sure why Barry's recommending a paid for solution when the server functionality is free.

It has the link to the server files there. They'll be able to play on that together regardless of where they are very easily.

OK, stupid question alert! Do I need to a server running? Or can one of the girl's laptops do the job of being the server?

It uses fairly low resources so I imagine one of the laptops will do just fine.

Laptop would run it if its half decent just remember to set it to allocate more mem than the default 1024mb.
I used to run my communities minecraft server from my pc so unless its massively changed this last year i can help guude you through it... its dead easy

Great advice, cheers. Not quite sure if the old Dell laptop she uses has the oomph to do it. It's not got much memory and some ancient intel cpu. I'll look into

To connect to each other using the free method, a tool from Logmein called Hamachi is possibly the easiest way. Both install it, one creates a room and a password, both sign in and sit in the hamachi room. Then the other would enter the ip address for the room or first person in minecraft multiplayer tab and voila
