Hi guys

Minecraft has taken over my children since lock down. They play Windows store edition PE is it ?

Anyway they now want to get into mods after watching countless YouTube videos. So believe they need java correct?

Couple of questions...

1. can you run java and the other version on the same pc ?

2. Do you use the same login ?

3. Best place to buy java edition?

Thread necromancy etc etc.

My son is tornado and Minecraft mad and there's a weather mod for Minecraft which includes tornadoes and other stuff. He has the Win 10 version and I tried installing minecraft forge and some other bits and pieces in order that I could add this mod for him. My efforts didn't work out too well (the install folder for the mods didn't seem to exist) and I believe it might be because (as mentioned above) he's not on the java version. However, this link here on the Minecraft website indicates that the Win 10 version can also be modded.

What I'd like to know, before I spend £18 on the java version (plus another £18 because his sister also plays Minecraft and will want the same thing) is whether it's my own incompetence and that the weather mod can in fact be installed on Win 10, or if it's definitely java only.

I am in a similar boat to you, girl and boy loving mine craft. Do your kids both use mouse & keyboard ? As mine were using xbox pads with Minecraft and that was my number 1 hurdle in going to java. Also the mods are not always kid friendly and updates and compatibility is required. This is something that let me think it was a waste of time. They both are back playing the win10 version and using the marketplace mods now. for me (kids 6 & 7) java was to much ball ache.

My children (who are also 6 and 7 :) ) do use keyboard and mouse, so that won't be so much of a hurdle, but I hadn't considered the hassle of mod updating. I remember what a pita it was when I used to play World of Warcraft and how the mods needed updating every time the game was patched. I'm already up and down the stairs every twenty minutes to fix their computer problems and don't want to add to the burden.

And then I look at how much my son wishes he could generate his own tornadoes and I remember what it was like at that age to want stuff but to be powerless to get it, and I think I should just deal with it.

Anyway, thanks for your insight, though I am now more unsure what to do :)

ha ha yeah well least you did not have to deal with "you can't use a xbox controller and sit on the sofa anymore" my kids also play with school friends on ipads and console so win10 works.

Off the top of my head, Minecraft Win10 version can be modded however the mods are not the same as the Java ones. If you link the mod in this thread that you're trying to use then we can probably advise you. Also AFAIK Forge is for Java, unless they now do Win10 too. It's been a while since I've played.

@_Jimlad_ you can turn off updates for the game so that you don't have to faff about with trying to patch in new or updated mods. Essentially you get the game set up with mods and then don't touch it or the mods again and just play it.

I think this is the mod in question, but I guess there could be others that are similar. If there was a way to get it (or similar) working on Win10, I'd be very grateful for the advice.

My son is so tornado mad, he's been watching Twister (for the millionth time) before school every morning this week.

Right, I threw it on Java and it worked so, yay!
It runs on an older version of Minecraft, so that may not be great for you.
In my experience, and looking at the rather limited site, it's gonna be a no go on Windows 10 AKA Bedrock, booo! Though someone in the Minecraft server thread may have more knowledge, I suspect the answer will still be the same.
I had a look on the only Bedrock edition mod site and only saw things to do with changing thunder and nothing else, booo!

In my limited testing, it seemed to work as a mod, got in, gave myself a weather cube thingy and spawned a tornado which proceeded to make a wolf, and large chunks of leaves, get picked up. Was kinda cool, made me think of the twister scene with the cow. :D

Installation of it was easy, I used MultiMC to download and add a version of Forge i saw someone had mentioned on github, then used it to add the two Jar files of the mods from the site. I didn't use the latest version of Forge, mostly incase there were compatability issues as while the other mod has been updated, the weather one has not been.

Sorry for the late response and thanks for checking it out. I think it’s going to be more hassle than it’s worth to set up. As much as I’d love to get the weather mod working, I can see the initial setup and ongoing maintenance taking up hours of my time (on both son’s and daughter’s computers) and I don’t think I’m prepared to invest so much effort.

No problem. The setup is fairly simple from what I remember, should be pretty much set and forget. Java version definitely has more options available to it, so maybe something for when they get a bit older and can solve any issues they have themselves :D
