Hi,

I'm trying to work on a possible solution for my brother to get him a medium based gaming PC for around the mark of £350 as the Christmas holidays are coming up and he really wants himself a PC to play a few game with, Nice step up from his current Xbox 360! (+ Convincing the parents :P)

I have 2 current setups which I think will work, but one goes over the budget and I'm struggling to find certain areas to save money over performance which is where I need some help with. I want it to be a primary build for him to play minecraft however with the ability to play other games at reasonable settings, (GTA4, BF3, etc.)

So here's what I come up with:

#1 -

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £95.99
1 x ASRock FM2A75 Pro4 AMD A75 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £65.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £45.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C11 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1866C11D3P1K2/8G) £39.95
1 x OCZ CoreXtreme 500w '80 Plus' Power Supply £32.99
1 x Zalman CNPS5X-Performa Quiet Compact Tower CPU Cooler (Socket 1155/1156/775/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2/939/940/754) £13.99
1 x Sony DDU1681S-0B 18x DVD-ROM (Black) - OEM £13.99
Total : £322.98 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Went with the AMD side of things as the new trinity CPU seems it could do the trick, however I don't know how well it will perform. However on a more (I kinder know what works build) Number 2:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7850 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards w/ FARCRY3, Nexuiz & Sleeping Dogs PC Games £119.99
1 x AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £83.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £45.98
1 x Asus M5A78L-M LX AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 MicroATX Motherboard ** FREE NEXUIZ GAME ** £41.99
1 x OCZ CoreXtreme 500w '80 Plus' Power Supply £32.99
1 x Avexir Blitz Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (AVD3U13330902G-2GW) £14.99
1 x Zalman CNPS5X-Performa Quiet Compact Tower CPU Cooler (Socket 1155/1156/775/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2/939/940/754) £13.99
1 x Sony DDU1681S-0B 18x DVD-ROM (Black) - OEM £13.99
Total : £382.91 (includes shipping : £12.50).

This is what I can put together however i'm struggling to keep budget and performance up and high.

Things not needed: OS, Keyboard & Mouse, HDD, Monitor.
However, if a HDD can be added in within budget that would be great as it means not using an old one that's ageing a little today.

Thanks in advance!

Number 2 will be a better rig, but comes at a price as you say. The power supply I would say is the only slight weakness in those builds.

I think number 1 would do fine. If not, you can always drop in a cheap graphics card at a later date.

Number 2 might do fine without the graphics card to be honest, you could try it without and then add in the graphics card? Or do number 1 and add in a graphics card. It is a versatile build.

edit: as always, stulid to the rescue with the perfect rig for the job

I don't know what people have against B Grade products? It comes with a 3 month OcUK warranty if I remember right, they can't sell outright faulty products, etc. It's an easy way to grab a bargain..

I've said already tonight in a few threads, I bought 2 of those Gigabyte Z68 mobos, both came with the I/O plate, user manual and are both fully working so far in budget gaming rigs!

I call it being savvy. :)

Great suggestion for what I need and in a nice price range, Probably wouldn't need a Optical drive tbh as it's going to be used mostly for downloaded games (Origin/Steam) when needed.

How does the i3/Intel Pentium perform against the Phenom 965 as I have the processor currently and find it to be quite good for what I need. So was going to stick with similar hardware, if you see what I mean?

However, giving me a nice overall idea of what to put together. Defiantly going to stick with a dedicated graphics card to run some decent games beyond minecraft!

Thanks for all the suggestions, seems these specs will do the job nicely. Will have a talk with my brother later on about it all. Thanks again!

Any other suggestions are again, welcomed however this should be okay for now.
