Minecraft help pic

Hi everyone

Im trying to set up a server for a friend to join but am having no luck what so ever i've tried the minecraft server.jar or minecraft.exe and im just getting

failed to connect to server

connection timed out:connect

What do you actually do in minecraft? Is it just building things? So its like lego basically? Or is there more to it?
