I've had minecraft installed on my PC for ages for my kids to play. I did try to give it a go but got fed up constantly having to check websites to see how to build things / know what to do. Recently i watched a few videos with my kids about some custom maps (Isles of Junara was on i think). It got my interest up quite a bit. I presume there are loads more like this? Where is a good source for them?

Are there any must have mods to install before i get playing? Something like an in game crafting guide would be priceless for me as would anything else that helps new players.

Just checked out those mod packs and they do seem to be a little overkill to start off with. Rei's mini map and the NEI recipe guide things look handy though.

I decided to avoid all mods for now until i know the game better. Have started Sky Survival - The islands of Junara 2.0 and am really enjoying it. Much prefer it when i have an objective of sorts.

Just stumbled across some info regarding minecraft hunger games mode, sounds like my cup of tea. Can anyone recommend some servers?

What would be the best way to get to some land that's a long way away and down quite a bit with nothing but air inbetween?

I've been doing a crouch walk backwards to make sure i don't fall off while making a platform out but have resorted to tipping a bucket of water i can swim down and back up again. Is there a more elegant way?

OK thanks, the problem is i'm playing Isles of Juanra and there is no ground to dig down in. I'm on a island in space trying to get to another one.
