Good evening gents of PC gaming.

I have a minecraft issue that I'm hoping you can help with.

I've been sent away on work to a place in the middle of nowhere for 2-3 months, terrible internet and not a lot to do. Fortunately 2 of the people here are PC gamers, but the only game we have in common that will run on all of our laptops is minecraft.

Is there any way we can set up a local server for the 3 of us to play on? One of the other guys has quite a powerful gaming laptop so we were thinking of using that to host but we're not sure how to do it locally without connecting via the net.

We're happy to drop a few pounds on any basic kit we might need - a small price to pay for evening entertainment.

tl;dr 3 laptops, no real internet connection, can we all play minecraft together and if so how?

You can all play it together easily enough as long as you can connect all the laptops - via wifi or ethernet or whatever.

Download the MC server software and set it to not require authenticated clients. Then fire up MC and connect. Should be pretty straightforward.

Perhaps a stupid question to ask on a PC enthusiast forum but how would we go about connecting via wifi without a router or similar? I'm really not up to speed with any kind of networking.

You'd need to hire the wifi from the hotel or where you are staying.
If you can tether your phone, let the phone act as the wifi connection but that costs quite a bit if your phone provider does not support.

Ah, got it sorted. Windows 8 hiding the ad hoc networking options away. We're now all linked, just gotta get the server p and running now!

I believe if you "Open to LAN" in a single player world you can play together while connected to the same network
