This is our first foray into Minecraft on the PC - having started with PE edition on the iPad then the PS4 version. Now my daughter's realised there are mods available so we have the PC version.

Thing is, I've followed all the instructions but when I fire up Magic Launcher then click on Setup, the field Minecraft.jar: simply states 'not found'. Then the field next to it states minecraft.jar. Any ideas how I can fix this? It's a brand new installation of Minecraft on a brand new installation of Windows 8.

FTB is a good starting point i've also used the :
ATLauncher
&
TechnicLauncher

there all pretty good. but the FTB packs seem quite stable for the most part well as stable as your going to get with a mod pack community created. they do a lot of in house testing and balancing.

it may also be good to watch some youtubers and see if they have any packs such as stampy cat very family friendly. but you may also want to check out some of the other youtubers as well (direwold20 is more technical and machine type orientated but family friendly). for some ideas what you can do.
there are also adventure maps quest maps, parkare and mystery maps if you want to try something together. instead of the build or survival maps.

was there a reason you went with : Magic Launcher ? did some one recommend it?

FTB will do all the work for you, magic launcher was created to do the extra stuff the normal launcher couldn't but it's not really needed anymore with the new versions of minecraft.

Go for FTB and you'll be playing in 5 minutes with 30+ mods.
