Minecraft newb!

I avoided Minecraft for months knowing that, much like eating a popular brand of tube-dwelling potato snacks, once I popped, I would not in fact be able to stop.

Finally took the plunge and downloaded Minecraft for my Xbox 360 (only because a bunch of guys on my friends list wanted help building some stuff!) and I was immediately hooked! :-)

It's such a nice way to waste countless hours.

Anyway, after seeing the apparent shortcomings of console Minecraft I bought a copy for Mac and now I'm eager to join some sort of community, so naturally I thought of all the nice guys and gals over at OcUK!

However after a quick forum search for 'Minecraft' I was lost in a world of strange jargon - mods, launchers, clients etc..... I just want to join a server and have fun/wander around people's villages/help build some mine cart roller coasters! :-)

With all that in mind, can anyone suggest some good OcUK approved servers to explore, or explain to me all this talk of mods and whitelists etc??!

Thanks for the links! Yeah the mods part is probably the thing I'm most confused about - I assume it's modified versions of Minecraft but what sort of 'features' do modified versions have? And is it like the old days of online gaming where you need to have the right version/mod before it'll let you join certain servers?

Also, launchers - is there any decent ways to 'browse' servers and join them just by clicking, rather than having to enter all the IP addresses etc. manually? I guess I'm looking for the Minecraft version of 'GameSpy' or 'Steam'! (if it sounds like I haven't played online on a computer since the days of Team Fortress, it's because I haven't - I'm a console gamer through and through!! :-)

Great, thanks! I've been reading up on mods (well trying to, there's not much easy to find about what each one actually DOES) and Tekkit is one I've seen mentioned, along with YogBox, Technic and Hack/Mine..... any ideas what each one of them does? Or any sites with an FAQ to mods? I'm surprised there's not more info on this on the wiki (or if there is, I can't find it!)
