Minecraft not using GPU

Hello,

My lad loves his minecraft but after a recent update his 8800GTX could not render the game anymore (OpenGL or CL or something) and the E6600 was weak.

He decided he wanted to update his computer so he could get back into Minecraft and other PC games.

We bought these for his computer:
i3 2100
Asus H61M-A
Crucial 4GB DDR3 1600MHz
R7 260x 2GB GDDR5

Minecraft plays a lot better but going by GPU-z the graphics card is not being used at all.

People on youtube using both lower spec ATI and Nvidia cards are running around with 200+ FPS where as this computer is getting 70FPS and dropping down to 20FPS when moving about quickly.

When turning the block distance up, it complete messes up the game.

I have changed the GPU/onboard setting in the Bios to PCI-e. Downloaded something called 3dmark and got 3777? (not got a clue what this score actually means). The first few tests looked fine and quick but when i got to the end where some fire bloke was fighting a see-through women, the FPS was awful.

Anyone know how to make Minecraft/Java use the GPU? Any more settings i should look at?

I will note, the system is using a old HD (180GB 5400RPM Sata), could this be a problem? The system had a fresh OS install after updating the hardware (windows 7)

very strange. my first question was going to be are you sure you're using the graphics card and not the onboard i3 graphics :p but seems like this isn't the case :\

you could try downloading FurMark and doing a quick stress test on the GPU to make sure that it's not getting artifacts and is actually clocking up properly.

not sure whether there's some advanced setting in minecraft/java that forces rendering on the cpu over the gpu?

the HDD may play some part by that would be more noticeable when trying to instance in big bits of land/objects when generating new terrain and such...

Yeah, everything is up to date. Everything was downloaded last night.

Say, i know Minecraft/Java prefer the CPU but i cannot understand why it is only using the CPU.

60% of the 4gb memory is in use aswell when Minecraft is started up. The last computer only had 2GB and only about 40% was being used then? Nothing is making sense yet. Just downloading Trackmania now to see if that uses the GPU.

Trackmania forever at full settings gets a average of 81FPS going by the in-game benchmark.

So that means the GPU is working at least. (the only free game i can remember)

Looked through all the Catalyst/java/minecraft settings to see if i can make the GPU 1st in line, i haven't come across anything that gives me this option though....

A shot in the dark..

You are actually plugging the monitor cable into the graphics card and not the connector on the motherboard right? I know you've changed the setting in the BIOS.

[edit] just read your last post which rules out my shot in the dark :)
