I've just paid for and downloaded minecraft on ubuntu 11.04. However, when Iog in, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then the error below pops up. If I force update, it updates, then the same thing happens.

I'm pretty certain that java is up to date because I just downloaded it from the software center so I could open with 'sun java 6 runtime'.

Edit: I thought that maybe running an older version of minecraft might solve the problem, but after a quick google the only hits I could find required knowing someone with a previous version, or having previously had an older version installed.

Sounds like a graphics driver issue to me.

I'm trying to play on a advent 5301 which doesn't have a dedicated graphics card - I can't see how minecraft can be graphics intensive though?

It's not that it's intensive, it's more along the lines that you probably have no hardware acceleration.

Open up a terminal and type in glxinfo | grep direct and post the result here. lspci and lsmod output would be nice too.

Copied and pasted from the Terminal.

Code:
tom@tom-DIXONSXP:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

tom@tom-DIXONSXP:~$ lsmod

Minecraft still requires a half decent graphics card though... You have SIS and thats simply not very good at all.

Try picking up a second hand nVIDIA card for about a tenner and it will be many times better than that SIS 761 - Which isnt very well supported compared to nVidia in Linux.

Just to check, you did try following the instructions on the site, right?

If you run into out of memory errors, try launching it with 'java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp Minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame'

Also, please make sure you're running the Sun JVM [i think Ubuntu uses an open source implementation by default]

That fixed problems i was having. Also - it's a laptop. Forget about upgrading the graphics.

I've never been able to understand graphics cards... any recommendations of a particular card? sorry about my stupidity...

Not stupidity if you dont know.

Ok, well the most simplest thing to consider when you are comparing graphic cards against using onboard graphics chips, is that graphics cards have their own memory, but onboard graphics chips have to grab a bit of the computers memory ( Hence, shared memory )

The shared memory has to both deal with the data for your programs and data, but it also has to display the picture on the screen too, so its going backwards and forwards all the time between these 2 and this means that both the speed of the display and the speed of the PC as a whole, suffer as a result.
With a dedicated graphics card, the CPU simply telle the graphics card what to display and the graphics card gets on with the job.

Its not quite exactly like that, but in a round about way it is.

Another way to look at it, is this :-

Lets say you are cutting your hedge but you are only allowed one clipping on the floor... You have to snip the hedge, and then brush teh clipping and then snip another bit and brush that... It takes ages doesnt it?
Well, imagine your mate alongside you with a brush! - You get on wioth the snipping and he gets on with the brushing... You will be much quicker wont you?

Thats kind of how a graphics card works.

I use the ~30 quid nvidia 210 (fanless!) and it plays minecraft pretty correctly (binary driver recommended!).

On the other hand, impossible to play with my laptop with a ATI hd5470, crashes at startup

Ok, thanks for the help, at least now I know why it won't work and can just leave it in peace. When I finally get a new laptop I'll remember to get one with a dedicated graphics card then.

Didn't see post #11 sorry, just tried
