Help! i've been tasked with putting minecraft on a laptop for my addicted niece (i hand't played it before) and i find out it runs like poo!

Using a dell inspiron 1546, 4gb ram, 2.2ghz dual core turion, radeon 4330m, win 7 x64.

I'm at my wits end trying to make this run decently, it's not a bad laptop and i'm sure other people have it running well on similar hardware. I've done lots of searching and i quite understand java is a poor platform for a game like minecraft and apparently notch isn't the best coder, but even then, the performance seems far too choppy.

Latest version of gcard drivers as well as catalyst (vision engine on lappys) is up to date at 12.6,
latest java 64bit,
latest minecraft release,
optifine ultimate installed with magic launcher,
no viruses or spyware,
Java and minecraft executables added to MSE exceptions list

Playing single player with pretty much everything at it's lowest and all the h

Sorry for the double post i can't scroll the text box down on this phone.

Game can get up to 60fps but regularly tanks to under 5, it can't be autosave because i have that set to over 3 minutes with optifine. tried allocating more ram and less. i've run out of ideas

I had a computer a few years ago off a mate that had a 256MB Nvidia card (that was decent) and a duo core intel that was at 3.2 I think, or 2.8, and Minecraft was unplayable. It has terrible optimization.

Laptop has been plugged in and all power saving features were turned off, all browser windows off, windows indexing off, tried setting process priority to high, reinstalled minecraft, ran in 32bit and 64bit java.

The only things i can think of that i haven't already done is reinstalling windows. I shall d/l cpu temp in the morning and see if that's playing up.

I haven't come across any settings that give me a choice of software rendering or hardware. could you you point me in the right direction? i have to hand the lappy back tomorrow.

A quick look around the interweb and i'm completely stumped. I found out how to do it with chrome but not minecraft. it might be worth asking in the windows software section.

when you say it regularly tanks to 5FPS how often is it doing that?

Minecraft naturally runs like poo. If you find that the game stutters a lot, you could try running the game from a ramdisk - just youtube 'minecraft ramdisk'.

Other than that there is not much else you can do to boost performance. Ignore all the bogus command line options for the jvm that people boast about.

Put on speedfan when i got home this morning...cpu hitting 100c  and gpu was around 95c. even at idle the cpu was around 70, tried to clean it but there's not much to clean unless i take off the whole casing.

Thanks for the help guys, i think my sis has insurance/warranty on it so i will be throwing at them.

What's that mod called? Opticraft I think? That makes a very positive difference to frameeates in minecraft. But yes, the gameis a mess performance-wise. Always has been

Its Optifine and Op already has it installed.

I imagine any other software than optifine wont change much.
