Minecraft Server Help

I've tried to make a server on minecraft multiple times but after binding port and setting ip and all the rest, no one else can access it! I can access it through local host, my internal IP but I can't and no one else can access through external ip!

Alternatively, just play on one of the OcUK servers.

Yes I have, I could do that but the point was that I could play with a few friends on a whitelist server, alternatively I suppose I could get one of them to host it. But I'd rather host it myself so I could pick the whitelist.

How did you set the IP and what IP did you use? I would recommend leaving the IP blank in the server config and make sure that you're not getting internal/external IPs mixed up.
