I'd like to set up a minecraft server for my son and me to connect to, me from my phone and him from his tablet (both android).

For a lot of the time it'd be on the local network, but when I'd also like him to be able to connect when he's away from my house so we can play when he's not with me. Is this something that is possible and if so is it easy to setup with it running on my main pc and being started as and when I want to run it?

I don't think you can do that, pocket edition version does not connect to PC server version. . There's a subscription based realm thing I think for it.

The Windows 10 Edition allows cross-platform multiplayer with the Pocket Edition, does it not?

Oh I don't know about that. I've only used the Windows 10 Edition for about 30 seconds.

You're not alone! I've only kept it so my son can play Minecraft on my PC using a controller! He's only five, so a keyboard and mouse is a bit perplexing! The vanilla version of Minecraft still doesn't support controllers, oddly enough.
