Minecraft server

I've thought about this in the past but...

How easy is it to setup a minecraft server?

Ideally I want something I can run on a VM, that the offspring can connect to, either from iPad/Tablet and PC..

Chances are i'll open the ports up on the router so their friends can connect as well...

Is this possible...?

Setting up a minecraft server is the easiest thing possible and cant see running it on a vm to be any issue. A minecraft server is as simple as running 1 .exe

Ok, well given only one of the offspring has a PC at the mo but both have iPads, can one be setup for that they can both connect too?

There is also a paid-for server service from Mojang called Minecraft Realms (it's not on tablet versions yet): https://minecraft.net/realms
